Hi all... i'm new to this slow cooker business.

I bought one today... a cheapo one from Tesco, and it didn't come with any instructions or recipes, so I'm wondering if there are any tips anyone has.

The only meat I'm not keen on is pork, unless it's sausage style. In the freezer I have beef. lamb, salmon and turkey so I'd like to know if anyone has any favourite recipes for any of these. :)

Also, are there any tips for like adding pasta or rice? My cooker has 3 settings, low, high and warm.

    All help appreciated!

Beef in red wine is delicious, not over keen on lamb joints in SC but chops are lovely in gravy with mushrooms and onions, don't know about salmon, what sort of turkey do you have - Whole or peices?

  • I dont think you need a recipe book or instructions. you can pretty much throw anything you want at it. the more creative the better

What an amazing thread :) I just bought a slow cooker because a) I'm not great at cooking and b) it will cut down on the use of our electric cooker. I will be coming back here often :)

Just batch cooked chick peas for the first time, really happy with the result, they taste much nicer than when I boil them in the hob. All ready to be frozen for later - btw, love the jacket potato tip!

I did that once just to test it out. in tin foil on the rest of whatever dinner i was cooking. Worked fine. foil conducted the heat

I was just wondering, did the jacket potatoes turn out more like potatoes boiled in their jackets or like baked potatoes....I'm assuming the potato skin doesn't go crispy like in the oven (that's the bit I like ;))

It's turkey breast that i cut up myself. Am planning on either cooking it in the SC or making turkey gougons with it. I got a huge piece for a fraction of the normal price on xmas eve.

If any of you have any favourite recipies please post them again. :)

Turkey breast is great any sort of chicken casserole, chuck in anything you like - chicken stock, (real or cubed) white wine, mushrooms onion and celery is lovely, a little cream if you have any at the end, served with new pots and something green is lovely.

Had no success at all with jackets in SC - I tend to now when doing some in oven do extra and freeze in foil and just put in oven/microwave from frozen
