    Hi all!
Just bought a slow cooker but it has no recipe book in box! Have got some good ideas from the thread regards what to put in it, but not sure of how long I am meant to cook it all for! Is their a good cookbook anyone can recommend? Thanks

There is supposed to be a booklet with every single slowcooker sold. You should have received one with it then. I'd go back to the shop concerned and ask for it (translation = tell them the one you bought is faulty = missing a bit and you want a complete one). I'm guessing you bought it from Argos then - as they are very prone IMO to selling secondhand goods as new - ie someone has quite obviously taken a look at it/quite likely even used it:eek::mad: and then taken it back for a refund as unsuitable:cool: . There are a lot of other "customers" out there who "pull a fast one".

Having said that - I've found that there are other shops out there that have sold me secondhand goods as new before now...and I've had to do the same. One of these fine days they will do their job properly (ie check when previous customers bring goods back for a refund) - or, at the very least, apologise for the trouble they have just put me to.....(rant over - its just a pet hate of mine to buy goods as new/perfect and then find they arent...)

A bit of a SC novice here. So i have a few Q's hope you don't mind!

When cooking a chicken do you cover the chicken total in liquids? or do you just put on a bed of something then put water at the bottom so it in theory steams the chicken? I like a crispy skin on chicken? Does this apply for other meats

In my SC is carrots and onions and a pinch of corriander x

You can cook a chicken without adding anything at all - I do all the time - it will be wonderfully tender and moist. Or if you prefer add something as Sublime has above. It will not crisp meats though.

SCs don't boil off water so always add the minimum amount of liquid.

I got one from Tesco some time ago and it doenst have a recipe book either! It has a 2 page instruction book but its very basic and has NO recipes. I didnt mind tho as loads can be found on here, by search engine and of course by recipe books (a passion of mine :o)

Don't worry. I haven't used any of the recipes included with my slow cooker. Just do a google, or look on this forum. Most one pot recipes can be adapted for the slow cooker.

A general rule is to put veg at the bottom as they take longer to cook, meat next, then just liquid to barely cover. If putting a joint of meat in, just put a cm or two of liquid at the bottom, as you'll get loads of juices from the meat.

I've defrosted my turkey carcasse and a chicken one that was also hiding in the freezer. Both have been broken up, added couple of carrots cut into chunks, quartered onion and couple sticks of celery with boiling water. Going to leave it on all night and pick it over in the morning.

May have to reduce the stock afterwards as I've not got much space in the freezer right now.

Today the slow cooker provided us with carrot & ginger soup (plenty to freeze as well, left over carrots used from xmas) and sweet potato and chocolate pudding.. smells gorgeous but not quite ready yet. There goes the resolution to lose weight already!
