Nothing yet but hopefully soup is going on in the morning, the kitchen is overrun with vegetables. I haven't yet made a successful soup and this is a bit of a desperate attempt.

Can I use radishes, marrow, swede, carrots and onion in the same soup? Should, or could, I add potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower and/or broccoli? Does it all need peeling or just chopping up? Does anything need sweating in oil first? What seasoning/spices for this motley combination? We like quite creamy, thick soups. Need potatoes and some veg to have with the roast, but soup will do for lunches next week, we all microwave stuff at work.

Just stick it all in, with some veg stock/water, garlic, cayenne/cumin/ or whatevers to hand, and it will be fine. Whizz it all up with a hand blander when cooked.

    Lamb stew today.

I'm making food to freeze in mine today. I've browned and chopped up pork sausages, loads of thinly sliced onions, sliced leeks, diced squash, chicken stock, sage, parsley and black pepper in mine. I tossed the sausage chunks in plain flour before adding them into the slow cooker. Will either reduce the liquid down at the end of cooking, or adding some Bisto powder to thicken it, depending on taste.
  • In mine today (using the slow cooker for the first time: is:
    Easy Beef Stew
    2-3 lbs. beef, cubed
    1 c. celery, in one-inch pieces
    4 carrots, chunked
    2-3 medium potatoes, chunked
    1 onion, sliced
    2 c. water
    3 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce
spices, to taste (bay leaf, oregano, thyme?)
    salt and pepper

Mix all ingredients; slow cook on low all day, at least 10 hours.

I didn't brown the meat or anything just warmed up the slow cooker and chucked it all in and am hoping for the best.
  • I got this recipe from another slow cooker thread on MSE but am not sure how long to cook it for. Can anyone help?

"can recommend this following seen on nigella - she did it on hob for hours and didn't just bung all in but seems to work just as well although i have adapted it according to what i have left over.

    1lb diced lamb
2 sticks of celery & 1 onion (wizzed up to mush in a processor)
    1 chopped onion
    2 tins of chopped toms
    1 carton of passata
    carrots
    mushrooms (not too important)
lots of white wine - i use half a bottle for the above quantities
towards the last hour or so of cooking i add in quick cook macaroni, it comes out lovely and soft."

Can I join in too please, I love my slow cooker but haven't been using it to its full potential. Im hoping that will all change when I start maternity leave in 2 weeks so bought the 6.5ltr one from argos last week.

Today Ive put in 1 giant turkey leg, potatoes, onions, leeks, carrots, sweetcorn, peas, pearl barley, garlic, herbs and stock and hopefully going to have with crusty bread this evening. OH has an allotment so all the veg is from there, now I just need to find lots of recipes for the glut of squashes we seem to have!

I would think about 6 hours depending on the size of the lamb pieces. I wouldn't bother whizzing anything up before I put it in as you could mash it down at the end.

In mine today I've got chicken that was browned first with sauteed onion, celery, carrot, green pepper, garlic, HG chilli, HG tomatoes, red lentils and veg stock. Salt, pepper and tomato puree. Going to have with rice and peas and cabbage and carrots. Possibly some HM french loaf I've just got out of BM.

  • ok i am browning off some mince to make a spag bal for tea,

and i want to use up stuff from the freezer, ready to make room for christmas stuff,

so this is what i was going to do in the slow cooker.

browned mince and onion with mixed herbs garlic

add a tin of campbells mediterranean tomato condensed soup ( was only 7p in poundstretcher..lol..)

    add water,

then add remains of frozen veg stew pack, and what ever tinned veg i got that i know i am not going to use...( long story)

also thinking of adding a tin of baked beans to bulk it up too

so it would turn out a bit like a mince beef tomato casserole

Just bought my SC yesterday (wee Argos one at £9.79, live on my own) and doing a sausage casserole today - 12 sausages for £1 from Somerfield, onions (39p Aldi), garlic, tinned toms, tinned kidney beans, red wine (left from wild weekend), and soy sauce. Smells lush and will do a good few portions. Brand new to this and SO much good stuff on here. Thanks.
