we have a slow cooker but have only really used it for stews....

is there anything u CANT put in it? is it a matter of just putting anything in it and leaving it for 6 hours?

    thanks all!

The only thing that I tried that really didn't work was liver. It turned into liver & onion soup. Still lovely and tasty - I just had to pour it over the mash!

I personally don't like sausages done in the SC. They end up a strange texture, a little bit like those sausages that you get in tins of beans.

And chicken can be a little dry if it's not got some skin and bones on it. If I'm doing chicken breasts, I tend to dice them.

Like processed sausages/frankfurters. I don't mind the texture but I've decided against making more sausage casseroles because the sheer amount of fat that comes out when I grill them stays in the casserole when cooked in the SC. Sclerosis in spades!

According to my instructions pasta n rice dont cope too well in SC,and instructions advise cooking first then adding last, but maybe others on here manage these items differently.

Tomorrow im putting in diced pork,onions/mixed peppers/mushrooms-dunno what it'l be yet?,ive a savoury mince packet mix thats sounds as tho it may go well with pork too?..will serve it with boiled rice..fed up with 'tatoes.

This evening I have the bones from yesterday's shoulder of lamb, some water and a little seasoning. Lovely tasty lamb stock to go in the freezer.

I've done pasta in mine and it was fine (although obviously took longer). I didn't have a cooker where I used to live and was seriously missing pasta so thought i'd give it a try one night!
    Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100
  • Hello all, I got a slow cooker at the weekend (very exciting!). It's the £15 half price Cookworks 6.5ltr one from Argos and am enjoying it very much so far. Overnight, I had in it the carcass from our roast chicken, along with some veg scraps, herbs, a bay leaf and hot water to make a stock. Then, this morning, I strained it to just leave the stock and put in potatoes, carrots, onions, peppers, peas, tinned toms, leek & sausages along with some leftover white wine, mixed herbs & garlic. I came home from work to a very tasty sausage casserole, although the texture of the sausages was a bit weird. I don't think I'd do sausages in it again, but I'm very pleased with it nonetheless.
  • Beef brisket will be going on in the morning, with a bottle of ale. Onions and shallots are ready, I thought we had mushrooms but someone ate them for breakfast, perhaps it should have carrots and swede too, we don't like celery. Or maybe just quartered potatoes... or dumplings?

Sunday's effort was another depressingly awful attempt at soup. It was so foul it went in the bin, a whole carrier bag full - the 6.5 litre crockpot was full to the top with everything I had handy, and cooked for 8 hours. Marrows, radishes, onions, carrots, cauliflower, tomatoes, and a pack of Morrisons soup mix (lentils etc) that was two years out of date but hadn't been opened. Also oxo cubes, passata, garlic and tomato puree. Didn't have cumin so I used coriander and a dash of curry powder. Maybe I should have left out the passata... or the marrows... or the cauli... I'm doing something terribly wrong with these veg concoctions, it's the second one that's been binned (not sure if it should have gone in the compost bin). I love tinned soup, as well as the Covent Garden ones, but come to think of it I've not seen marrow soup. The hens can have the remaining marrows and I will stick to buying soup, resenting what it costs isn't as bad as throwing food away :-(
  • I've just found this thread and will be watching it with interest...we bought a slow cooker last week and I need some ideas...there are loads of lovely recipies on here...thanks so much
