  • I've just been given a slow cooker by my OH's parents :D One of those infomercial things came on the tele, thinking of all the good things you lot have been saying about them, I said 'I'd quite like a slow cooker' and they said they had one that they never used so I could take it :j

Just copy and pasted loads of recipes into a word folder, ready to write down for my recipe file, can't wait to get started!

If you have/get any recipies then post on here!;) Will be good for us all!!!! :T

Love my slow cooker..mum got me a new all singing and dancing one for Christmas

i have just popped in some stewing beef with onions and gravy..going to slow cook the beef today..made some rough puff pastry and going to make beef pies for tonight.
think i have enough for at least 4 good size pies - i shall eat one and freeze 3.
slow cooking stewing steak is a great way to create meltingly soft filling for pastry top pies or let it cool and use as a filling for pasties.

As of 11pm last night a whole chicken. Going to use it for sandwiches etc today for our boat ride (it'll cost less than the formed sliced chicken I was going to buy in Sainsburys yday) and the rest thereafter.

Can't believe how tender it gets - wings and leg fell off while trying to get it out.

In mine today - leek and potato soup - I get fed up watching pans on the hob so tend to do soups and stuff in the slow cooker where I can ignore them until I'm ready to deal with them (mine cooks much faster than recipes state as well for some strange reason).
Tomorrow - probably chilli or something (realized I missed a day out when I was meal planning so going to have to store cupboard wing it)

I have a slow cooker gathering dust on the top of the cupboard have tried many many time to make delicious recipes but they ALWAYS come out bland and uninspiring thus meaning the slow cooker is probably destined to rot ontop of the kitchen cupboard for many years to come :(

Have you tried some of the SC recipes from here? Until you are used to the SC I would stick with recipes specially designed for SC cooking, once you have got used to it you can adapt other recipes, its important to remember not to use too much liquid. good luck:)

Do try it again, it really is worth it. Here's my recipe for steak and mushroom pie, measures are only approximate:

500gm braising/stewing steak cut into 1 inch cubes
    1 large onion
    pack of button mushrooms
Stock (I just use 2 oxo cubes in ~400ml water)
    heaped tablespoon flour
    oil
    salt & pepper
    1 tablespoon worcester sauce
    pinch thyme
    puff pastry

Chop the onion coarsely and fry gently in the oil until golden but not browned. Scoop out and put it in the slow coooker. Fry the steak on high heat until a bit browned, add the mushrooms, then add the flour and stir well to coat the meat. Add a pinch of salt and a good bit of ground black pepper. Transfer to the slow cooker and add the thyme, stock and worcester sauce, give a good stir, cover and leave it on low overnight.

Next day you just need to put in a dish, cover with puff pastry and pop in the oven until the pastry is golden! The slow cooking makes a lovely rich sauce, goes well with mash and carrots/greens.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.
