I've just thought, I always use sea salt. If using regular table salt, add 1/2 teaspoon salt to begin with, if necessary add more later ( as there is salt already in the bacon, and in the veg stock if using a cube). I shall amend my earlier post!

OMG just read through most of this thread and now Iam scared of my SC
It hasn't come yet mind, 5.5litre from Amazon. Never had a SC before so it all sounds a bit daunting. We practically live on shepherds pie, pork chops, chicken breasts and sausage casserole. Now and again we'll have spag bol but mainly meat and 2 veg.

Think I'll be visiting here quite a lot. All very interesting and informative :T Will let you know how I do or don't get on. xx

Don't be scared of it! It makes cooking reeeaaallllly simple. I was a terrible cook - bland food, overcooked tough meat - and even I have managed to make things tasty and tender using my slow cooker.

Sausage casserole in the slow cooker - yum
Chicken breasts in the slow cooker - yum and fall apart tender
    Spag bol - yum
Meat joints - yum and fall apart tender

Do all your usual recipes in there and see how you get on. Good luck!

I have left over roast beef which i did not cook for long enough in SC last week!

It went in the freezer and is now in again with onions and gravy, so 2 meals out of 1 joint which is good going in this house.

In my slowcooker today...: large beef joint, stock, onion, mixed herbs and red wine

Will have with potatoes mashed together with greens.
    (it is a Dutch thing;))

It is so cold and lashing with rain here today so a nice hearty warm meal is needed.

I go through periods where my slowcooker is in the cupboard for ages and then all of a sudden I use it lots. I already cooked a huge batch of mince in tomato sauce for the freezer the other day, portioned it up for the freezer,

I think it must be because the pot itself is so heavy and quite awkward to clean and put away again, I just wash it and leave it on the worktop and think what else can I make this week. Once I get fed up with it taking up so much room on the worktop I put it away again for a while. :D

Thanks - it still hasn't arrived

Can't wait to try cooking a joint of beef. I always mess this up. At Easter i bought a £10 peice of brisket, cooked it on low for about 3 hours and my god it was as tough as old boots!! Disapointed. But i always manage a tasty gravy from the roasting tin. How do you do a gravy from the SC? I always add gravy salts, flour and water mix to the juices.

Sorry to sound dumb but you all seem very knowledgable. :D
Just to win anything would be great!!

I use my slow cooker loads. Its one of the best inventions ever. I have only done a roast in there once ages ago (joint of silverside), and it was really tender (for some reason I tend to use my oven for a roast as I bung all the vegetables in at the same time). I can't quite remember what I did, but I think I seasoned the meat with a coating of mustard, salt, pepper, and flour (to thicken), briefly browned the sides of it quickly in a frying pan, then put it in the slow cooker and poured a small quantity of red wine, rosemary, and some vegetable stock or water in.

You won't be disappointed at any rate, as there are loads of great slow cooker recipes out there. You just bung it all in and enjoy! ;)

I tried an interesting one today (from a slow cooker recipe book):

'spiced couscous with apricots, feta and pine nuts'

    It was very nice indeed.

    Thanks.
  • Done a "roast" chicken poached in white wine and garlic in mine today... now put in the oven to finish off with tatties so have bunged the leeks and kohl rabi in half the stock still in there... it's smelling divine!

my sister made this recipe up , I tried it yesterday and it was delicious
I sliced the potatoes but I think she cuts them into chunks
she part boils some potatoes and carrots , then adds them to the slo cooker with some stock
she puts mint sauce over them then puts some lamb in ( could be a joint, chops whatever you've got )
more mint sauce on top and leaves it all day
    it was very very nice
another thing she does is makes a beef stew and then buys some flaky pastry , cuts it into rectangles and puts the pastry in the oven for about 20 minutes
dishes up the beef stew and puts a pastry lid on top and voila beef pie just like the posh chefs do
