In mine there is a pound of white beans simmering away. Once they are cooked, I will combine them with a mixture (already made and waiting in the fridge) of red onion, garlic, chunks of tuna from a tin, chopped tomato, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Then let it all cool down together to blend flavours, and serve on a bed of salad - with fresh crusty bread. There will be plenty left over for lunches during the week.

Were these beans out of a packet that needed cooking first? If so, hadn't thought of doing these in the slow cooker - how long do you put them on for - always worried about poisoning the family - call me old fashioned!! That meal sounds gorgeous!!!

P.S. Have anyone seem any bargain slow cookers lately as mine is on its last legs? The switch on the front is broken so i have to use pliers to turn it on and off and its really difficult to judge which setting i have put it on. Needs to be an oval one large one as I do large joints :) Thanks x

Hi AlwaysHappy - yes indeed they were dried beans out of a packet. I soaked them overnight first, then rinsed, put into the slow cooker with fresh water to cover the beans by about an inch. According to the recipe they should cook for about 6 hours on low - but do check as you don't want them to go to mush.
If I want to make this more quickly, I cook the beans in my pressure cooker. Or you could cheat and use tinned beans - but it is better to cook them because the flavours mix better when you combine the beans still warm with the other ingredients and let cool together.
Today I am going to experiment whether this recipe freezes, as it makes a huge quantity. If if works, it will be nice to have some in stock for summer eating in the garden, and picnics etc.

You could probably get a new knob for it from Maplin (they are online too).

Mince and onions with chopped celery, carrot, Marmite dissolved in hot water and a sprinkling of plain flour. Can't wait for lunch now, even tho the sun is beaming down on us this morning :D Should be ready about one-ish to enjoy with some veggies and boiled potatoes. Was gonna do a fruit crumble with cream for pud, but as it is so warm today I think I will do a treacle tart instead (proper black treacle too) mmmm....

Hi all, have been lurking for a while a decided to post at last!

I have put a chicken in my new slow cooker- bit anxious as I have never cooked a bird this way before. I stuffed it with some onion, breadcrumbs, sage leaves mixed with egg, and rubbed it with a bit of butter and squeezed some lemon over. Fingers crossed!

I picked up an excellent book awhile ago at a bootie called "Real Food from your slo-cooker" by Annette Yates & Wendy Hobson. It basically shows you can cook practically anything in your slow cooker! Including pineapple upside down cake!!

costs £4.59 and is in stock!
    Enjoy!

Just taken a smoked gammon joint out of mine.

Done for 6 hours (my sc doesn't have temp settings, so just *done*) with a couple of sprouting onions and some wilty celery chopped up in the water. Peppercorns and bayleaves also added.

Gammon is delicious, will make a couple of good meals during the week and lots of sliced ham for sarnies. The stock makes amazing soup.

    All for £5! :T
