Today I have bolognese and i'm still not sure what to do with it! Didn't fancy any of the usual cottage pie/lasagne/spag bol etc. but it needed cooking so in it went.

I will probably end up having cottage pie anyway as have a lot of potatoes to use and then perhaps turn the rest of it into a chilli. Or maybe put the mixture in pancakes...sure I saw a recipe for that on here. Mmm!

Asda has one for £11, 4lt. Anyone know if it's any good?

Hey, I've not encountered it myself but there are a couple of reviews here . Looks quite promising! Looks like it has all the features too - glass lid, low high and auto and removable dish, capacity 4L. Product spec is here with another good review.

Being round im not sure how easily you would fit joints of meat in like a full chicken etc - dunno as Ive not done boned meat myself but may be something to bear in mind.

Hi DizzyK, don't forget to let us know how it goes and if it's a winner post the recipe!
Need to get back into the habit of using mine again - keep falling down the organisational gap!
Has anyone experimented with cooking stuff from frozen in the SC? Sorry if anyone has asked this before - have read most of the thread but not all!

Too late I'm afraid, it's all gone!!

It was pretty good, DH and DD (4 - fussy) scoffed the lot with rice and broccoli, DS (18 months - possibly fussier) didn't touch it!

It was a bit made up, but casserole steak, onion and mushrooms all fried up then bunged in with white wine, oxo & water, tomato puree, mustard, seasoning and a bit of fresh thyme, then creme fraiche stirred into it before serving!

In my slow cooker today I have:

Stewy beef (Floured and browned as per kidcats suggestion)
    Onions
    Carrots
    Herbs
    Veg and beef stock

It already smells amazing, should be good when I get home from Overtime & Errands.
Well, it was tasty but the sauce wasn't thick enough, making it more of a beef soup :rotfl: The meat was yummy and tender though so not complaining too much.

Should I have thickened the stock with cornflour?

I'm not just new to slow cooking I'm kind of teaching myself to cook (much to t'other halfs delight!) so any hints/tips would be ace.

    Cheers

If it looks too thin near the end I mix some cornflour with a little water and stir in, then turn up to high for 20-30 mins it really thickens up quickly,

Sainsburys (and probably Tesco too) do Basics wine that I use for cooking - a 75cl bottle of red costs £2.49; bargain! I also buy the Basics cider for making drunken chicken.

I buy Asdas cheapest wine for cooking, I find I can usually buy a bottle for £2.20- £2.30 and if I plan right I can use half in say a bolognese and the rest a day or so later in a different dish, using it all pretty quickly.
Although I did use an expensive bottle for my first beef bourginon, but next time it was back to the cheap stuff and you really couldnt taste the difference.
