Whenever I cook stews etc they always tend to come out too runny, even though they look like there isn't enough liquid in there at the start.

What do most people do if they have this problem, is it best to turn the heat up (I normally cook on low) or take the lid off for a while?

Sorry. posted this in the wrong thread, I have changed it over to the Quick Question thread
    Hi Everyone
I am after a bit of advice if anyone can spare me a minute. Just ordered my new slowcooker, to be picked up tomorrow. I have ordered a MR 6.5 litre one as lots of people say it is very good. In theory I hope to be cooking enough for for us to eat for one meal and then freezing enough for another meal. What I am wondering is what if I dont cook a whole pot full, if the slow cooker is only half full of ingredients? Will it affect the cooking time or anything else?? Hope this isnt too stupid a question and I will be very grateful for any advice.

In mine today is chicken casserole -

    4 chicken breasts (whoopsied), cubed
1 bag diced swede and carrot
    1/2 an onion, diced
    1 can chopped tomatoes
    1 pint thick chicken gravy

Would like to put some fresh herbs in, thinking parsley, any suggestions?

  • Just put mine in for tea tonight - Pork apple and cider casserole

    Chopped up pork
    Cider
Apples, onions, celery, carrots seasoning and abit of stock.

Will thicken it later on and serve with pots and green veg. Yum.

I had my first attempt in the slow cooker yesterday. I had chicken breasts, cut up, a bag of casserole veg and a stray pepper out of the fridge. I added some mixed herbs, a bay leaf and made up a gravy using Bisto.

I put it on at 9am on auto. I needed it to be ready by 5pm as I was going out. I had a quick poke at it around 3pm and it did not look as if it would be ready in time so I turned it up to high for the last two hours. It was fine then.

I clearly need a bit more experience on the timings. The leaflet that came with the thing (Cookworks) is useless. I am going to go to the library tomorrow and see if I can get a recipe book.

my experience is the recipe books onlyhave one or two recipes that i use time and time again, i tend to juts adapt normal recipes to suit the slow cooker and read here for tips and advice
  • Venison w/ bacon, mushrooms, carrots, celery and red wine bubbling away in mine. :D This will be used as a pie filling later on - one for tonight's dinner and one pie for the freezer. I love my SC - don't know what I'd without it!

For cookery books, keep an eye out for them in the charity shops. I've picked up a couple of 70s / 80s slow cooker books from charity shops - some of the recipes are a bit old fashioned but there are always some classics (beef in beer, goulash, etc).
