  • Mine has half a chicken, 4 slices of tinned pineapple, a chopped onion and a few sun dried tomatoes. It smells lovely and I'm just about to have it with some rice and fried spuds with tortillas.
  • Hi everyone! I got my very first SC (3.5L but theres only 2 of us!) today in TJ hughes for £10 - but I was just wondering, are you supposed to brown meat etc before putting it in the SC, or just put it in there raw..? x
  • Parsnips, potatoes, onions, stock, so not very exciting but Parsnip soup for work tomorrow.

I've got a load of frozen Mr T Value stir fry veg - it's vile in a stir fry but would it do chucking it in the SC for veg soup?

I wouldn't put frozen meat in a SC - the cooking temp is so low everything needs to be really hot before it starts to cook in the SC, or it may never actually reach cooking temp.

I've done it with chicken last week - a solid lump of 3 frozen chicken breasts at 8am, topped with a large jar of curry sauce and chopped onions and cooked on low for 10 hours. Hubby stirred it up when he got home at 3pm, and I chopped the well cooked chicken at about 5pm and stirred it back into the sauce.

I think it's to do with getting through the 40-140C 'danger zone' where bacteria breeds rapidly as quickly as possible, isn't it? I've put uncooked meat in before (to begin cooking immediately), but never frozen - I think as slow cooking goes that really is the big no-no.

I don't put frozen veg in either - tend to give it a quick blast in the microwave so it's hot when it goes in.

    HTH.

    Hello again,
As promised I said I'd let you all know about my beef in mulled wine casserole.
It was amazing! Meat so tender it fell apart and a fantastic sauce.
Loads left too so have frozen enough for another meal for 4 and a couple of individual portions.

I love my slow cooker! :j

  • My SC has been used and abused today! I have cooked tea in it this afternoon-Chicken stew comprising Diced chicken, carrot new potatoes gravy ganules, bay leaves mixed herbs and tomato puree.
I have just taken out 6 portions of quorn chili for my lunches at work-total cost about£8 for the lot and much healthier than the cheesy paninis I was buying before xmas and spending £15 a week on

    God bless the slow cooker!!!

Stewing steak, onions, carrots, mushrooms, celery, beef stock and Loyd Grosman tomato and basil sauce. Added some red wine, and later on some beef gravy. Yummy.
