Hi I bought a SC from Asda last night, it was a Morphy Richards one, and was £25 (6 litre) I came on here for a look and have seen some great advice and recipes, but have also seen 2 posts in 2 pages about morphy Richards one over heating and burning stuff!
Im concernes as i was hoping to cook stuff overnight or during the day when im out. Are they generally ok? I still have the receipt to take it back and maybe try another one if someone wont mind recommending one. It need to be big to serve a family of 4 and batch cook for the freezer.

    thanks

  • OK decided!

Thai green curry paste, tin of low-fat coconut milk, small tin water chestnuts, thinly sliced onion (not pre-browned), some marinated garlic cloves, mushrooms.

And i have some prawns defrosting ready to go in near the end.

Debating now whether to throw the rice in near the end also, or to cook it separately.

I notice when I leave my MR on for more hours, the food looks a little burned in one area, on top. It's not actually burned or crusty though, just looks that way and when I give it a stir it just blends in, if you see what I mean. So I'm not regarding it as a problem at the moment. Hope this helps.

Overall, I love my slow cooker and I am sure you will too!

  • Nic, I have a Rival Crockpot 6.5L and it's a good un. Was about £30 from Amazon if thats any help. It does need to be half to two thirds full to cook without overdoing the food.

I did need a big one as I used a 3.5L one and was overfilling it - there are five of us.

  • I've just put in a lamb hotpot - it's the first time I've done this recipe (I've only just discovered you can do things other than stew in it!) so here's hoping it'll be nice :)
  • Moroccan Chicken

    2 onions, slice up
    2 carrots, slice up
    2 chicken breasts, cubed
1/2 butternut squash, cubed (should have been sweet potato)
    1 tin chickpeas
    Water to just cover
1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp each of ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and black pepper
    juice of 1 lemon
splash of olive oil if browning ingredients first

This is from my slow cooker book - New Recipes for your Slow Cooker by Annette Yates. It doesn't have a very exciting cover but the ideas are good. I got it from the book club at work.

    Happy SC cooking!
  • Quick question
Bought a load of fresh stewing steak from butchers yesterday - bagged it up into portions to freeze. only I put the whole lot in freezer wanted to keep some out for today to put in my slow cooker.

Can I put frozen stewing steak into the slow cooker or will I have to let it defrost first.
Alternatively I have a couple of cans of stewing steak can they be used in slow cooker?

    Any help most appreciated

    thanks

I wouldn't put frozen meat in a SC - the cooking temp is so low everything needs to be really hot before it starts to cook in the SC, or it may never actually reach cooking temp.

Balsamic vinger is lovely over roasted veg (either English winter veg like potatos, carrots, onions etc. Or mediteranean - peppers, sweet potato, onions, tomatos)

In my SC today (which is actually a compartment of my oven, so not sure how MSE it is, if any knows, I would appreciate it) I've got some stewing steak from Costco, carrots, onions, potatos and pearl barley with the turkey stock from Christmas. Will serve with a great big Yorkshire pudding I think.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Definitely fine; this is the one I've got and the ONLY time it's burnt stuff slightly round the edges has been when it's been less than half full. I've sometimes peeled and chopped up potatoes just to bump up the content; on a low heat overnight or during the day they've always cooked beautifully.

Made a GORGEOUS gammon and borlotti bean soup in there last week; absolutelky delicious
    That's Numberwang!
