  • Ooh can I join? This thread has inspired me to make my first post. I have so many things I want to try this year: making jam and chutney, decorating etc. My first challenge is to be making bread again instead of buying it. There, I've said it so I'm committed now lol.
  • Ok ladies. I steamed the syrup sponge for nearly two hours. Took the grease proof and it still hadn't cooked. Now normally this would end up in the bin but I thought I'd stick itin the oven while we had dinner and half an hour later it was cooked thru. So not exactly steamed. It tasted ok but it's not a recipe I would use again.

So my challenge for this week is up. Its not been a great start but I'm going to keep going.

How are you all doing with your challenges?
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

So how are we going to do this?
Are we all going to work individually on our own challenges or are we going to try to do the same challenge so we can share tips and sucesses and failures?

I don't know what others think but I think we should set our own challenges for the week and then report back with either recipes or techniques or cleaning solutions that way the thread will be filled with hundreds of money saving info for us all to share.

  • I cooked a lamb shoulder for the first time in my new slow cooker (just cooked it on slow in veg stock) it was amazing! Going to try and do lots of things in my slow cooker this year. Especially meat as I rarely cook it well and end up throwing away. :(

I have knitted 1 and 1/2 mittens for my 7 month old boy, may have to finish tomorrow now. Here is the pattern if anyone is interested http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5462527/Super%20easy%20baby%20mittens.pdf will post a pic when i am done

And I have taken down all the xmas cards and cut up to use for shopping lists (always say i will do this but never have)

And to top it off i made brownies that were actually edible (first time ever!)

Very OS start to the week :T

  • My husband went fishing all day with my Dad so had the house to myself :)

The little one was well behaved too so it all fell into place today for a change. I normally end up just burning something or making a mess!

I'm going to try and make a good washing up liquid

Ok, I have made my washing up liquid by boiling 1 litre of water and adding 4 grams of soda crystals, 4 grams washing soda, 1 teaspoon white vinegar and a few drops of treetree oil.

I have washed up once with my mixture and so far so good. I will keep using it this week so I can make sure it washes everything well.

So it seems to be a good start for me.:T
  • Well done kippers. What are you keeping it in?
