Welshwoofs wrote: »Absolutely agree. I'm (obviously) very vocal that I'm a skeptic about this because I have seen absolutely no proof that ghosts exist or that mediums are anything other than fake. On the contrary I've seen lots of proof that specific reports of a ghost/possession have had causes that are not supernatural. I've also seen that, despite lots of calls (and prize money) for people to demonstrate they can commune with the dead, none have been able to.
So this is the logic that I follow:- Everyone, including believers, acknowledge there are total con artists out there who'll dispense 'messages from the dead' in exchange for money.
- The believers will say these are not 'real mediums'.
- If there are 'real mediums', then why don't they answer one of the many calls from the science community to demonstrate that what they say is true?
You seem to be suggesting that fake mediums = proof that ghosts don't exist?
I don't trust fortunes tellers/mediums either but I do believe in the unseen."fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell)0 -
Yes, I will update when my visitors come. I am determined not to influence them as I really want to see if other people have a similar experience to us. I have only told one friend. The Australians who are coming over don't know anything except the fact we have moved to an old farmhouse.0

No, I'm saying that there has been absolutely no evidence put forward that ghosts exist or that mediums can communicate with the dead. I'm saying that if, as people on this thread seem to be saying, that there are 'fake' mediums out to get your money and good, old honest 'real' mediums who have a real gift....why don't those good, old honest 'real' mediums answer one of the many calls from science to prove their gift.
The only mediums to answer that call in the past have all proven to be fake.
To refer to Person_One earlier - you cannot prove a negative. I'm telling you there are fairies wearing silver deeley boppers who live at the bottom of my garden and sit around singing old Carpenters' tunes. Prove there isn't. Of course you won't be able to. So are the fairies real? What would persuade you they were real....evidence of them perhaps??“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

All I know is a house I used to own had a "ghost". Our living room door would open on its own - the handle would go down like someone was using it rather than just opening. Our cat would stare transfixed with hair on end looking at the top our stairs and follow the stare to the bottom stair (if you see what I mean), our swing bin would suddenly start swinging and then stop and the best thing, if you were in the bathroom (with no one else in the house) the bathroom handle would go up and down like someone was trying to open the door! My dad and sister experienced it too so not imagination as did other visitors. There were other things too.
We named our "ghost" George and talked to it and really it didn't bother us after a while. I did once try and empty my mind and ask George to talk to me and "he" gave me information about being in the Canadian RAF. Me and sis did some digging and sure enough it seems Canadians were stationed in our town and the houses in our road during the war. No idea whether it was super imagination but it was never a threat. I often wonder if the owners after us ever experienced anything.0 -
Omnasia I hope you enjoy your time with your friends and are able to relax and enjoy the house you worked so hard for.
The thread has been very interesting reading from both sides of the subject. People have very strong beliefs - and we are all entitled to our beliefs as long as they harm no-one!
xIf you wait for perfect conditions, nothing would ever get done! :T
I'm not short - I'm condensed awesome!0 -

I have met one medium who gave me an awful lot of very specific information, not general stuff, really specific and accurate things. She even described perfectly a collection of decorative stones that I had in my garden which she couldn't possibly have guessed from looking at me! I would love a skeptic to meet her to see what they thought.I had no idea she considered herself a medium when I met her and was very taken aback when she started telling me things that she couldn't possibly known or guessed about me. She didn't charge me any money either before you ask.;)
The thing with her and other mediums that I have known other people to see is that I don't think they would care about "proving" themselves to the scientific community as they already believe and so they don't seem particularly interested in fame and fortune or scientific research. I can't explain how that medium seemed to know so much information. I don't know what the explanation is but the cold reading theory doesn't cut it as an explanation for me as the stuff she said was so specific.0 -

Whenever people bang on about it not being proven in a lab or something I always thinks well, it's not just about the 'mediums', it's about the 'spirits' they'd be communicating with and if they're 'spirits' that couldn't give a rats !!! about 'proving they exist' the poor old medium is screwed0 -
It's all interesting stuff. I've heard of that happening when someone dies and visits someone at that precise moment. It's very strange.
My nana used to tell a very similar story about when her mum died. Her mum was ill, but nothing life threatening (a cold). Nana went to the shops to get her something and suddenly got this overwhelming feeling that her mum had died. She went to the nearest phonebox and rang home. The family doctor answered and explained that her mum had died (nana was an adult).
This gave my nana comfort I think. She was very close to her mum and it gave her confidence in the afterlife.0 -
A close friend of mine "ran over" a woman late at night on a lonely country road. Once he'd got out to check her injuries and found no-one he revised his "I don't believe in ghosts" stance.
Years ago my great uncle awoke in the night screaming about having his leg sawn off. He was on holiday at the time, and upon arrival at home he learnt that his sister had had her leg amputated at that precise time. In the words of his wife, "that explains that then!"They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -
FWIW I don't believe in ghosts/ the paranormal/ any of the gods etc. They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0
