  • Hiya,

All those things would creep me out too! I don't really believe in ghosts/spirits etc. but unexplained noises and things still make your mind wonder!

If its really bothering you, I would take on board some of the suggestions here. Get the house blessed, or have a look for someone who might communicate with the other side (hehe). If that's what it takes to put your mind at ease, then go for it!

Then you'll be able to enjoy your new home that you've worked so hard for :)

    Best of luck

I just think there must be a logical explanation but in the middle of the night you dont always think logically. Maybe we will get used to it but I just don't feel 'right' at the moment, hard to explain.

There is something called Infrasound which humans can't consciously detect, but it makes us feel uneasy as though there is a presence. Some researchers think that areas where a lot of people have had odd experiences may just be areas where there is a lot of this infrasound.

It does take time to get used to a new house, especially an old one. The problem is you will now start listening/watching for strange experiences and you end up in a vicious circle. Personally I don't like living in old buildings in that they do seem to have a life of their own with all the noises and things shifting.

Are you the sort of person who is sensitive to noises usually?

I found that when I first moved into my new flat I couldn't sleep very well because of the weird and unfamiliar noises I was hearing during the night. (Bumps, bangs, whirring sounds, etc). Our is a new building so I never thought of it being ghosts and spooks in the night, but it still woke me up several times a night and put me on edge.

I put it down to me being overly sensitized due to having lived for years in a dodgy area in a city before moving here, and noises like bangs or thuds could have been some druggie trying to break into the house, or who knows what else.

It took a few months, in fact, before I was able to relax and sleep ok in our current place.
  • Maybe you could set up a video camera near the door that's slamming to rule out a few possibilities such as small animals.

No, I'm not overly sensitive to noise. I've lived in 5 houses (well, bought 5 houses and lived in a few more rented, plus holiday homes, friend's homes etc) and this has never happened before. The odd creaking etc yes, but not full on thumps. I will try to investigate if there are any animals that might have got in but I don't see how. Can't ask the previous owners as they have emigrated to Australia and we never even saw them.

Hermia, I've never heard of infrasound but that sounds interesting. Thanks for support everyone.

How old is the current electrical wiring?

Older houses with older wiring can generate excess electro-magnetic energy. This energy has been proven to have an effect on the human mind and cause symptoms including (but not limited to) increased feelings of paranoia/dread, stress, depression, aural and visual hallucinations and insomnia.

Sufficient build up of this energy in specific areas can also cause phenomena people associate with the paranormal, including doors being forcefully opened or shut, objects falling off shelves, strange noises as the force pushes against solid objects and such related phenomena.

It, of course, doesn't have to be caused solely by faulty/old wiring. Defective electrical appliances, such as microwaves, refrigerators, freezers etc. that are usually left in a permanently "on" state can contribute to the release of such energy.

It might be worth having this checked out. There devices that can detect electro-magnetic energy and if there is a high-level of such energy, not only might it prove responsible for the eerie feelings you are experiencing but it is worth having fixed because there is some evidence that prolonged exposure can cause a physiological reaction.
  • I think that would spook me too. I have felt that 'uncomfortable' feeling in some houses and others have felt very welcoming when you walk in so I suppose there is something causing that feeling. I once stayed in a cottage where Florence Nightingale lived in Derbyshire. I went to bed but just couldn't stand it and had to go into the other bedroom with my kids. I don't know what it was but it scared me in that bedroom !

It won't do any harm to have the house blessed - https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts/pastoral/healing/protectionpeace.aspx

You don't necessarily have to believe in what's being done.
  • Squirrels make a terrible racket. Then you have foxes, glis glis, feral cats (who would make a heavy thudding sound jumping down from their hideyhole), deer clumping around outside, barn owls, weasels, stoats, rats, pigeons, crows, magpies, ravens..............

Wildlife is a far more likely explanation for noises and the sense you're being watched. There could concievably be a homeless person using an outbuilding. But animals are more likely.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Yes I would go for a blessing or a healing.
Instead of being afraid of the presence try and befriend it. Face it and talk kindly giving it reassurance. If nothing else it will help change your perspective and you will hopefully become more accepting of the house.

I have faced a few presences in my time and have written about my ghostly helpers when I have been conducting homebirths before. Try not to be frightened and try to be kindly and curious to whatever is about x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
