I would very much doubt if the police will do anything.

I think he was using the forecourt to do a quick turn around. He seemed very eager to get away after scribbling his reg down as illegible as he could.

Why should I chase him up when the police will do a better job. They are gong to view the cctv.

This seems a change in story. I thought you said the guy was in tears and really upset over the incident. Now you are implying he just jotted down his reg and scarpered?

So have they been out to see your mum? I guess they'll have traced the driver now?

How did she get on at the hospital?

What a load of rubbish! You wasn't even there!!

    You stated originally:
She said the man was apologetic and in tears himself.
Really sounds like someone very eager to get away. With the sudden change in story, seems like theres more to this then meets the eye.

Of course the man was upset - I would be if I hit someone driving at less than a snail's pace and if it wasn't my fault. Human nature, these things give you a shock!

It's possible it was or wasn't the mum's fault, but the point is, now the police have been called in, in the event she wants to take things further, they will have that CCTV footage. It gives her the option. She might not want to do anything right now, in two months' time, she may feel very angry. Her decision.

Regarding medical treatment though, it is important to be checked out. How many of us have had a 'little accident' before, felt absolutely fine and then turned out to be less fine than we thought? Insisting you're okay when there's a high chance that actually you're not is incredibly British. Sometimes it takes a forceful friend or family member to ensure we get the care we need.

FWIW, I'm glad the mum is feeling okay and the police have been called in. If they investigate and find that the driver isn't nearly as dangerous as the OP reckons, I'm sure they'll be delighted that nothing is wrong, rather than upset about having their time wasted. Sometimes erring on the side of caution is best.

And what font of all experience and knowledge brings forth that conclusion...bear in mind your dislike for assumptions.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Think they have better things to do.
So far there is nobody hurt apart from a bit of a bruise and virtually no chance of a conviction.

I can't see that you can predict that with such confidence on what we have been told.

There will be the CCTV, which will show the standard of driving. As none of us were present, we can't say whether it shows the driver's standard of driving falling below that of the competent and careful driver.

I read the thread but can't recall if OP's mum appeared to have any injury at the scene. If she did, the duty to report / provide insurance details arises. We only know that the driver provided his details - we don't know whether that included insurance details. It would be straightforward to prove whether he did provide that / report as required.
