I'm loving this thread and picking up some good ideas, but... I find it really frustrating that as I'm following a weight loss group and have been successfully for a year now I can't buy a lot of own brand/value/basics food as its always full fat! I've noticed recently the cost of my shopping going up and would love to be able to switch to value, why will they not do the low fat alternatives to fight against the brands?!!

low fat is full of sugar so you are better off having full fat but not as much, tastes nicer as well :D and keeps you full longer and doesnt spike your blood sugar.
  • Tesco value cream cleaner !!! 32p
It's great and I've used it for over a year now and don't clean my bathroom with anything else apart from bleach.

I know it's not food but then after re-reading your first post I realised it doesn't have to be only food. Asda Smartprice rim block only costs 20p and does as good a job as any of the rest imho!
  • All sorts of bits and bobs from Home Bargains but I'm a sucker for Mcvities Ginger Cake/Golden Syrup cake at only 39p each

Bella Ricetta tinned Cherry Tomatoes from Home Bargains. 39p a tin or 3 for £1. Every bit as good as Sainsbury's TTD ones which are now 89p!

We also buy the McVities cakes at 39p. I cut into thick slices and keep in a box in the freezer, handy for a quick pud with some custard.

Aldi sweets - especially the Eclairs which were 23p a bag when we last stocked up on them.

A day after posting I stocked up on Aldi eclairs again and they are now 27p - still a bargain though even with the 4p price rise!!

  • We love Asda Smart Price Squash, available in Lemon (our favourite), Orange and Apple & Blackcurrant.
Was 32p for a 750ml bottle of double strength, no added sugar, but I noticed yesterday this is now up to 42p. Taste great and still good IMO.
  • Sorry if it has been mentioned but I love the Lidls Passata I think it's 19p or 21p, can't think at the minute but I always make sure I have a good stock of it!

Mars and milkyway drinks in Heron frozen foods are only 3 for a pound which works out at 33p each :) they used to be 5 for a pound but still I can't moan. I get 5.00 worth each week because they don't last long in my house.

I love doing my frozen shop at heron it doesn't half cut my food bills. I get my tea bags, san marco pizzas for my oldest son, packed lunch bits and bobs, yogurts, drinks, frozen meals, cat food. I absolutely love their strawberry custard creams for 27p too!

We are recent converts to Heron Foods, they have some amazing bargains, even in big name brands.

OH loves cup a soups with his sandwich and Heron do the Heinz concentrated liquid sachets which are his favourites. I think they are 59p each everywhere else but 6 for £1 in Heron :)

I love Lidl's Kidney beans at 18p, their passata at 29p.

    I also really like Lidl's
    Partbaked Baguettes - 2 for 39p

Mozzarella - 47p per ball - lovely and creamy, great texture and you can buy a low fat version which is great too

Thats all I can think of for now :)

Yep, I agree with all of those above! Their tinned chopped tomatoes are good as well at (I think?) 31p. We've found that their branded tinned beans/toms etc are always exactly the same price as Sa1nsburys Basics versions.

I wish people would stop this huge over generalisation. Low fat does not always mean high sugar - sure with some processed foods its the case but skimmed milk isn't full of added sugar, fat free natural greek yoghurt doesn't have more sugar, low fat spreads are bulked with water not sugar. Trimming fat of a steak or not eating the skin of chicken doesn't magically add sugar to it.

Value oats are no longer under 50p but a big bag is breakfasts for 3 of us for a week or more, as well as fab for baking.
