I buy the basic bag of rice at Morrisons, we cannot tell the difference with any other long grain rice and it's under 20p ( I think 14p but I'm not sure). I also buy all the basic /value tins of carrots, mushrooms, kidney beans and tomato/passatta. They are great when cooking. The passatta/tomato makes great pasta sauce when added to poached onions and garlic and fried a bit. I think it's about 35p. I generally have a couple of jars of pasta sauce for very quick meals or when DH cooks, but I generally make it myself with one of those tomato tins or cartons as a base, it tastes much better than any bought one and it works out cheaper even after adding the other ingredients.
I also buy the basics pasta, again, once cooked, there's no difference whatsoever in my opinion.
Morrisons also has the 100 perfumed nappy bags for 12p, great value.

  • I agree with the toothpaste I tried Asda's sensitive stuff and it did work (compared to regular toothpaste) but my dentist recommended Sensodyne, so I tried it and it is much, much better than the Asda stuff.

I agree. Sensodyne is the only one that really works!

Sainburys do a 6 pack of basic loo rolls that are really good value at 1.99 and are as good as the dearer stuff

I use Nicky loo rolls from farm foods. 2 x 9 pack for £4 and they are the best I have found 22p each

  • I like chicken & ham paste in a sarnie every now and then - but hubby refuses to go near the stuff - calls it cat food! He's probably not that far from the truth, I don't suppose the ingredients list is very good qulity - but I still like the taste! :D

Sardine and tomato paste is a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm not even a big fish fan but I love this stuff! I try not to eat bread too often and sometimes I just eat this with a spoon I love it so much!

I will definitely get some of the Sainsbury's value tea next time I go there... I usually buy Twinings so would save myself a fortune if I like this.

I have tried shopping in Aldi/Lidl as everyone goes on about how cheap they are but I spent a fortune when I did a weekly shop in there. Plus I couldn't get half of the things I wanted.

Does anyone have any good bargain buys if you follow Weight Watchers or Slimming world? I know SW would be easy enough with pasta etc but I have to avoid pasta etc on SW as I go too mad and don't lose. On WW I end up only eating ready meals though....I need some diet budget help!

I know it's way over price at 99p but Moser Roth 70% dark chocolate from Aldi is amazing.

10 p stock cubes (beef, chicken, veg) from Sainsbury's are fine.

No Aldi or Sainsbury's here, perhaps a visit is needed when we are on the mainland in the summer.

quintwins - my eldest hates mint anything hence hates mint toothpaste. I thought he was getting too old at 8 to use the kids fruity ones (and some say 0-6 so not sure if ok??) I've found at long last that Lidl's do a herbal tasting toothpaste (not herbal toothpaste just the "flavour") called something like "herb and fresh", its with the mint toothpaste. He will happily use that now - took a few brushes to convert him mind.

    sq:)

Thanks he's only 3 so i'm ok for now but i may try that for the bigger 2.

Thank you to all who recommended the Sainsburys Basics Tea Bags. I picked a box up last week and can't fault it! Even tested my OH buy making his with them and not telling him and he was none the wiser. We already use Aldi Red Label but converted!

Now, if only there was a decent substitute for Kenco Millicano Coffee. Love "fresh" coffee, hate instant but this is lovely.

Tesco everyday hair conditioner. 12p. I used it to shave my legs with, much cheaper than shaving gel and doesn't dry out skin like soap does. Lovely clean, soft legs and it smells ok too!

  • Its over 50p but I find that Clipper organic coffee is not far off filter taste. I only need to use a level teaspoon as so strong. I love coffee but can't bear horrid stuff. I do wait until its on special offer tho as otherwise over £4. Cheaper than Millicano tho. If I get less fussy I can buy Coops own. But it has to be the Gold. Again on special offer. Both are Fairtrade too. Hope that helps my Millicano friend. :money:
