The Chip & Pin card reader from iZettle does not attach to a mobile phone, it interacts wirelessly. So the customer can hold the reader, put their card and pin number in directly and then remove the card. Just like in a shop!

The only time a customer would need to enter anything directly into a mobile phone or tablet is to type their email address for an emailed receipt.

I haven't seen a mobile card reader that prints as well. It wouldn't be mobile then as it would be too bulky! They all need separate mobile printers.

I did a test transaction on my iZettle reader - fast and easy. No different to a static terminal in a shop.

i noticed they have the chip and pin reader which appears a little bit more legitimnate to sceptical buyers. I hope that means the visa issue was sorted as well.

In the past they had a clip on attachment for a phone that connected through the sound port. Didn't look very legimimate.

If you read my first post at #69 you will no doubt note I have addressed both the chip & sig to card reader and the Visa payment issue.

iZettle was the one I kept coming back to in my research. It didn't matter what I looked at, this was the one for me.

  • Have recently bought the iZettle system and am very pleased with it. Like some of the other posters, I run a small craft business and didn't want the expense of a monthly charge. Had to get a second mobile as neither mine or my husband's mobiles were compatible for the app. Tesco mobile have a Samsung phone which is compatible at only £7.50 per month, so now we have a business dedicated phone as well (paid for by Tesco finding a new contract for OH's phone at £7.50 per month less than his existing contract).

I have got round the email bit by using a standard receipt book. This is quicker than trying to type on a very small keypad, and also means customers are not concerned about giving their email address to someone they may never meet again, and worrying that they may be bombarded with marketing emails. You can skip the email receipt option. Have had no problems with either Visa or Mastercard transactions.

My experience with izettle was poor, had only been with them 6 weeks when they decided to close my account because my clients were paying with visa cards only.

I returned the card reader but never got a refund.

Wouldn't talk to me or respond to the questions I asked them.

I wouldn't use them but other people have positive experiances

I've been using iZettle in my taxi for a few months. Worked fine at first but recently I'm getting funny messages appearing mid transaction and can't tell if it's gone through or not. The online account I find hard to understand, transactions are not recorded, missing transactions. The other day I couldn't get it to work at all and just had to let the customer go without paying.
So I'm starting to get a bit fed up with it now. I don't use any card readers just the phone app, which tends to work fine for Mastercard, its the Visa text thing where it hangs up. I can't get American Express to work at all, though to be fair I only ever tried it once.

Were you both using the Chip & Signature reader? The Chip & Pin reader doesn't appear to have any bugs and Visa payments can be taken without the faff of text messages.

So am I right in reading from your post that with iZettle there is no difference in transactions through Visa as opposed to other cards? If so that removes the principal objection to iZettle that most of us had who went to World Pay.

The no more than one card reader and lack of clarity of fee structures of World Pay are minor arguments that don't apply to lower transaction volume users IMHO.

Izettle is an outstanding system. Its small, mobile and pay as you go.. Above all, its simple to use. Highly recommended.

yes, and so are the other systems… my very specific question was about the VISA card issue that was always the main barrier to people going to iZettle.

If you have a Chip and Signature iZettle reader then the issue with Visa is still there.

The new Chip and Pin reader means you can take Visa card payments in the same way as other card payments, i.e. via the reader.

I am only a small business but with two people on a stall at dog shows it's far easier to have two readers than have to keep passing one back and forth. We can both take payments at the same time.
