Thanks for all the encouragement to do baby led weaning. I've been a bit worried about the choking risk of eating solid food but yes the idea of eating normal food does sound natural and I will give it some serious thought.

Yes it is important that you read up on the choking / gagging reflex but just so you know that gagging is a natural part of the process and is the way they get used to having food in their mouths. They have to learn this skill at some point and spoon feeding can actually cause more choking issues as you are putting the food beyond their natural gagging reflex. With baby led, they explore this feeling by themselves and have control of it :)

The Gill Rapley book and cookbook are both fantastic buys and full of loads of info and I always liked the comment that you let your baby grow up and learn to do everything at their own pace, crawling, walking and talking so why is it when it comes to eating we suddenly want to control it! Let them feed themselves! :)

    Good luck x

Ooh I loved baby led weaning with my two! It's so much fun! DS is nearly 4 now and other than the usual "I want control" thing, he is a good eater, as is DD (2). I have video of her chomping away on florets of broccoli at 5 months old, when she just grabbed at my plate.

Unfortunately the little booger then ditched her milk as it was just no fun anymore, but on the plus side she confidently helps herself with scooping veg etc, and manages a non lidded cup, knife and fork etc. love it!

ETA the Gill Rapley book was great for us, too. I gave it to the grannies so they could understand why we weren't spoon feeding.

Anyone have any good recipes for toasting nuts? I have some ys blanched whole almonds, but I'm not keen on them plain. Can I just salt them and dry roast them?

Bit peeved with my Mr T order this week and last. Ordered it for 8-10 on a Monday morning and they were over half an hour late both times.
No apologies, no phonecall and unlike Mr S, no voucher to say sorry!

    Bah humbug!

I believe MrS have stopped their £10 sorry vouchers now:(but they did still phone me to say they would be late and apologised:)

PS I always fed my babies on HM food, they pretty much had what we had (within reason of course) We didn't buy jars or tins. They are 30 something healthy lads now, who will eat almost anything and love to cook

Spent £11.16 yesterday but an NSD today (signature updated) and hope that the next two days are low spend as well because there is a works birthday function on Friday (budget £20).

OH made Singapore noodles - enough for 8 portions - and the ingredients only cost about £5 so very happy. As a treat I got a Chinese roast duck for this evening with pancakes and spring onion/cucumber (don't have the sauce because it is too sweet) - I add to the spring onions and cucumber spinach leaves, tomato, fresh basil, fresh coriander, fresh tangerine segments from one taken from the fridge, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, teaspoonful of balsamic vinegar, teaspoonful of toasted sesame seed oil, pinch of cayenne pepper.

Still have half for tomorrow lunch at work :D.

On the down side - have to do complete toiletries and cleaning materials shop on Saturday. Oh well, fiscal ying and yang I suppose.

Have a good day tomorrow everyone.

  • I did my (hopefully final) shop of this month today, coming in at just over £42... Got the menu plan done, for all 3 meals, and should have plenty in the house to keep me going now until the 25th, which is the end of my month. Just need to avoid the coke machine now!

    2. Bombay potatoes.
    3. Cannelini bean with couscous.

Lots of which are in the freezer now.

Just managed to use up a huge red cabbage bought by Mr Fluff - not sure why - I think it winked at him! Delicious with mashed potato and veggie sausages

    And enough left for tomorrow!

Went to Asda last night for cheap beans and tinned tomatoes, and was going to pick up 3 peppers in a pack and they were £1.65!! I looked at Lidl online and saw theirs are on offer for 89p.
Where do others buy their fruit and veg from?
