Totally agree with your pov, it doesn't matter what your financial situation, it doesn't excuse theft!

Theft has stlll not been proved

Perhaps we will leave the hanging, drawing and quartering until then?

OP - this woman HAS to pay up, it is wrong that she took the money from all of you. If needs be, let her save face by pretending that it's an honest mistake (though it clearly isn't, imho).

No way could she have paid the tip in cash - she didn't have any, which is why she was going to the ATM, but she didn't go and therefore had no cash for the tip!

She should reimburse £34 to you all - you get your £30 back, the waitress gets £4 next time you're in. All sorted. No way should you be out £45!!!!

I feel sorry for Thingy. it sounds like the OP and her workmates didn't want her there and, from the OPs description, she at least went out of her way not to make her welcome once she was there. Maybe Thingy knew what she was doing and just thought stuff them all. if her colleagues want to treat her that way then they deserve what they get. including a cr*p reputation at the restaurant for "failing" to leave a tip.

Maybe you should all think twice before you participate in ostracising someone in an office situation. Sounds like it can be expensive. If I were in Thingy's shoes, OP, make no mistake, I would be waiting for revenge. First and every chance I got I'd take it. And you would be top of my !!!! list.

Your workplace sound worse that the primary school playground! Shame!

Er, Thingy seems to have had form in this respect. And if she did do it on purpose, then that is theft, plain and simple.

Work is not school. In the real world, if you behave badly, people won't want to socialise with you. And outside of work, they can't be forced to.

Wow -I hope YOUR workmates recognise you from your post-some co-workers should come with a warning tag. You're obviously one of them. You're just toxic.

Too late to post but I will do so anyway. I am just catching up with my long emails.

As soon as Gibson123 found out from the restaurant manager that a tip had not been left she should have reported this to the person who was responsible for organising the meal - she said it was not herself. That person could have spoken to the manager and waitress before speaking to Thingy aand would not be accused of having a bias against Thingy, unlike Gibson.

I read quite a lot of the Moral Dilemmas and I'm afraid to say most of them sound made up and a bit of common sense would solve them in a minute. This one sounds like a very likely scenario, especially in the lead up to Christmas and Gibson did not mishandle it, it is just that she should not have been the one to attempt to do so.

When I was in work a few of us went for a meal most Fridays and it was common for one girl to ask to pay the bill on her card as she was often short of money. We were happy to help her out but the tip was always paid in cash. This girl did not just pay without our knowledge but always asked first. If a situation like the Thingy one happened, we would not have involved HR as it was a social situation outside the Company, just as if something happened if we all went on holiday together. If the fallout affected our work then the Company would probably get involved.

Just a what-if here, not intending to say this did or didn't happen.

Suppose Thingy did have some cash on her, and was getting close to 0 on her bank account. And she thought that she would pay the bill on a credit card (therefore £135 cash to tide her over, but as she's put the meal on her card, she hasn't stolen it) but give the tip from cash she already had i.e. her own, not the group's. But while sorting the card transaction, genuinely forgot to hand over the tip.

So while she has £135 of the group's cash, she has the 115 on her credit card bill and the 35 as tip, but made a mistake in not paying it.

Then took the cash off the table without counting it, emptied her bag later at home and found she was £30+ up and didn't understand how, or put the money straight in her purse without knowing how much was in there to begin with so didn't notice an error, or realised what she had done but didn't know how to put things right. (Especially if rightly-or-wrongly, she did feel bullied/excluded/disliked by the others in the group.)

Just one suggestion. However, the fact she appears to have previous at this kind of thing makes me think it's unlikely. Then again unlikely =/= impossible.

ETA: Ach, disregard this - I've just read your other thread on her ripping off the cancer charity stunt.
