I once got PlayDoh for bubble bath
It was a childrens bubble bath so I guess there was a (tenuous) link there! I sent it back but realised I should have kept it actually because it would have been an excellent bargain!
No other interesting subs to report though... oh Asda gave me mixed herbs instead of mixed spices last week but while that's a bit daft it's not very excitingSave £12K 2013 #54 - £4625/£15k£19,625 saved since 2011£50,000 by August 2014SPC #1925 £600 -

The Birds Eye were more expensive than the Tesco ones, so they price-matched. But... there were only 2 in each pack. So I got 4 pieces for the same price as 8! Why didn't they send me 4 packs of 2?
The thing is, if I shop in-store I don't expect them to give me the more expensive brand at the price of the cheaper ones, when the cheaper ones are out of stock. Instead I make a choice- 'do I want them enough to pay more, or can I wait until the next shop when the cheaper ones are in stock?'
If you don't want to possibly pay more for subs then select the 'no-subs' option and simply don't get that item if it is out of stock.
I am not sure why you would expect to get a more expensive item for the price of the cheaper one, just because something is not in stock?Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Or you could take your money else where, if the store offers you a sub, 90% of us would be happy to accept what they offer, especially if its a better brand for the same price, this means they've got your money instead of you going somewhere else (and possibly going back there next week)Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -

We cannot even order online up here, despite having a Tesco. We have to buy in the shop and they can drive it home for us, and I think we can maybe phone but that's it!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

I didn't expect more for my money but I expected a substitute similar to what I'd ordered. I'd have been happy if there was nothing similar. I'd have accepted that, but what they sent me was half the quantity of what I'd ordered, so not like for like. They could have just left that part of the order unfulfilled instead of half providing it for the same price.0 -

In fact I haven't ever seen any which really don't make sense, but unless the website starts asking the customer to specify alternatives for EVERY item they order in case they are out of stock, you will never keep anyone happy. If a customer orders a 6 pack of Walkers cheese and onion crisps, but it is out of stock, do you:
substitute it for a 12 pack of Walkers cheese and onion crisps, knowing that it will likely cost them at least 70% more and they will not be refunded the difference;
I use Ocado, which is completely different again, but I was always under the impression that any substitution made would be given at the original price not charged more?0 -

You are correct, you would not be charged the extra. If you ordered 6 pack of crisps and we had to give you a 12 pack, then you would pay the 6 pack price xxWins in 2013 - Jan - Heinz No Noise Ketchup.0 -

You did expect more (read the last line of your original post). But like I said, in store you would not have got any better in terms of options, if you had only wanted to spend £x then you could only have got the amount they supplied to you, at the that time, or waited untik the cheaper one was in stock. At least they sent some.

Every store has their pros and cons, one of Ocado's pros is that they do not charge the difference for substitute items if they are more expensive. Not everyone does that.
Clearly customers are happy to live with paying the difference if they get a more expensive item though, our Online department is massively expading at the moment, in our store alone we are DOUBLING the size of it over the next 12 months.0 -
I barely get any substitutions by Ocado, and when they have been, as above, haven't been charged anymore for subbed item if higher quality. I tend to get a lot of the 3 for £10 meat to freeze and have had waitrose lean mince subbed for Duchy Originals mince and price has been adjusted in line with the offer. I have to say though, I am quite tempted to do shopping with Tesco for fun to see what I get
Russian roulette of groceries!
