I sent DD1 some advent calendars at University.

She (and her friends) were delighted, as they were all a bit sad that they weren't going to have one this year........................

I do this too!:D One for each house-mate. It's amazing how 44p advent calendars can elicit so much pleasure in 20 year olds......

When my kids left further education they just had the one gift instead of lots.

    Debt-free and Proud!
My daughter is 20 and she has had a budget of 300 quid for quite a few years. She has been told for months (in a nice way) this is her last christmas with a budget as she will be 21 not long after, has lived away for a couple of years and now finished education.

Put it this way, I asked my mum for a Tangle Teaser and some Lush products. I know for a fact she's went overboard, I heard talk of Elemis...

You know Im probably an absolute nightmare for local shops but the internet has been a god send for doing Christmas/birthdays on a budget. By being a bit creative and doing your research its amazing what you can get without feeling guilty over the cost.

We stopped buying large presents for our 4 boys once they set up their own homes/earned more than us/had children!!! this has worked out well, we now do a secret santa for us all and spend about £20 -£25 on each of the grandchildren buying well in the sales. Youngest DD still lives at home and will get a big present and a stocking. I really hate buying tat that no-one will use!!
Started doing that as well. :)

My mum still goes mad for presents, even though I am out of the house and living with OH (and am 27).

It drives me mad...! She does get me very nice things, as she knows me so well but I wish she would spend her money on herself.

But have you thought how much pleasure she gets from shopping for bits for you and your OH
I have two daughters and attendant son-in-laws plus seven gorgeous grandchildren yesterday I spent half the morning wrapping their presents.I know what both of my Dds tastes are and I have the eldest who is not short of cash and already has lots of things so I get her things like perfume and make-up etc plus silly frilly bits for herself. My youngest Dd is permanantely broke as both her and her OH spare cash goes on their children (they have five)I wrapped for her yesterday a calender(big family organiser one),Scarf and gloves set, perfume, pyjamas, diary for her handbag, book that I know she wanted, some chocolates that I know she loves and her Amarylis that I buy her every year and a set of chunky beads. She never spends any money on herself all her cash goes into the family pot so I enjoy getting her a few bits and pieces that I know she will appreciate. She is very good to me during the year as is her OH in the nine and a half years since her Dad passed away I have never made a Sunday dinner I always go to hers in the afternoon. If I need anything done indoors either her or my son-in -law will do it without anyproblem at all.My eldest DD is the same we are a very close-knit family who all look after each other and are there when needed.I am extemely lucky to have such two caring daughters and I love to show my appreciation by treating them at Christmas Its just my way of saying thank you for being such super caring ladys. From Christmas Eve until after New year I switch between their homes and am never alone for a moment as I have the tribe of grandchildren to 'play' with :)I am so blessed to have my tribe and how they behave with me in no way relates to what I spend on them, whuich by the way isn't a great deal in monetry terms. At my age ( have most things I want or need) so spending cash on myself seems a bit pointless

buying your adult child prezzies like they used to get when younger?

with us, it was when we got married/started living with a partner. My mum hasn't stopped altogether, our santa sacks (ie christmas gift bags now) are just slightly smaller than they used to be when we were kids :rotfl:.
