  • Never

My adult still gets things like Kinder eggs too and Santa seems to fill the stocking with things like facewipes and perfume samples where used to be toys

To be honest my Mum continued to do this even after I had left home and moved in with OH plus he got loads as well, it stopped really after the kids came, now she has diverted the piles of prezzies to them

  • Have never done the settee full of pressies.

DD (aged 16) will have a stocking with something to do, (fun game, maybe lego type) something to read, (book that she will have finished by breakfast!) something to eat (choccy) and something to wear, (make-up) plus nuts and a satsuma as she's had since she was a baby.

We exchange pressies after breakfast on Christmas Day, but she's never wanted nor ever had an immense lot of pressies. We've always gone the thoughtful route not just bought for buying's sake at Christmas.
  • My mother seems to be a little like you (blossomhill), and only since turning 40 this year, she's finally backing off buying me loads of gadgets and things that I really don't need or want and end up sticking in the wardrobe or loft to gather dust. I obviously fake the smiles at the time, but have dropped increasingly less subtle hints over the years. She's finally got the point I think :D
I, on the otherhand, stopped buying the stocking fillers and gifts for my own son 19 now, but would rather help him out with real world issues like mopeds(in the past)/car insurance/work clothes etc etc.

I'd love to continue but as there is only me on my own now...no presents to give or receive, I was going to say no Christmas cards but a couple have arrived so the windowsill won't be totally empty.

I plan to attend some carol services trying to summon up some Christmas joy. Will try and cook a festive meal and have a little tipple. Watch some christmas TV and listen to some Christmas music and the radio. I must try.

Never give up your giving and time spent with loved ones if you have any.

I'll donate some more goods to the local foodbank and hope some less fortunate than me have some joy at Christmas.

................ depends on how many adult children/grandchildren you have to spend your hard-earned on ;)

Unless you've got pots of money to spare, or no grandkids to buy for - once they're turned 18, and/or earning more money than you are, I think it really IS time to rein the spending in a bit.

If their faces 'drop at the very thought', just remind them that you're looking after their 'future inheritance' :rotfl:!
  • I think it depends on what your "child" wants and what you can afford.

My DS is 17 yo and I told him he has £50 this year for xmas and it was his choice if he wanted the cash to buy clothes or spend as he wishes. He said he prefers to have a stocking and just a few "main" presents.

I get cheap pre-loved DVD's online some are just £1.28, poundland is good for various chocolates, ebay for pre-loved board games, shopped around for cheap character mug and character socks, chocolate coins 2for1 & old spice when on offer at £1.50. This left me enough to get him a hooded top from primarni, and some 007 aftershave on offer at £22.50.

I have 6 adult children adn 9 grand children
I stopped when they left home and were earning, dropped to a single present then,

Now I buy for the kids when mine were young theynever had lkess than 30 parcels each at christmas so it did come as a shock to them when they eventually stopped.

On the other hand as there piles got smaller mine from hubby ( my santa) grew and now I get a large sack full of pressies every year.
