cydney, thanks for sharing that. My OH is rather similar. Sees economising as a trip to W-rose for a mega fakeaway rather than an actual takeaway. The former can cost more than the latter  but he's still sure it was very thrifty:rotfl:

Nice to know it's not just us!
  • Work brought forward payday at Christmas and that has created the longest gap between paydays I have ever had but finally today I can kick off the 2013 Challenge!

£250 into my Regular Saver, £600 into the new house fund (Mrs MM & I are paying in £300 each) and I have saved £437 into my own savings. I have also put £50 into the savings account for our summer holiday. 6 of us have booked a cottage down in Sea Palling which I am told is lovely in summer, its a place I haven't been so why not!

I'm not counting the £50 as that will get spent at some point, but very happy Mrs MM & I have saved £1,287 in the first month which puts us on target for the year!

Bless her my OH has food hoarding issues. She thinks I don't know about the five stashes of chocolate in the house  There are 11 packs of butter in the freezer, 20 tins of soup in the garage along with 16 tins in the cupboard. Today she claimed the fridge was empty when I challenged her about the cheese. Empty apart from the two bags of potatoes, swede, more tomatoes, 5 packs of cheese, 2 boxes of cheese spread, a pack of crumpets, a plate of grated cheese (you're getting a theme here!), mayonnaise, 4 pots of jam, squeezy cheese in a tube, 6 yoghurts, 2 pots of dip, some cheese sauce (:D), 2 bottles of coke, milk, ham, fresh pasta, dog food (ok so perhaps that doesn't count), tomato sauce and pack of four rolls oh and 2 scones!

    Edit: I don't eat cheese!

    Hi Slowlyfading,

Your reporting form has a few references to 2012 still, just letting you know in case anyone is saying they're confused!

Well, I've been paid and slightly more than I thought (emergency tax for 1st month).

The last food shop of the month has been done and I was £40 over my £400 budget for the month. That did include 2 trips to Costco (including stockpiling of toilet roll and washing powder). As this was my first month of budgeting, I'm not going to alter the budget for Feb and will see how we do.

All my bills for the month were paid at the start of Jan, apart from mortgage which goes out on 28th (already had the money in my account for it though). I also have some expenses to claim back from work which will go back into current account. I will calculate those tomorrow and should be able to see what I am left with. The aim is to move some more money across to savings before the end of Jan.

January payment of £480 into my savings transferred now I've been paid. Not sure what I can overpay this month just yet, but hoping to have about £60 or so spare after other expenses. On to February. :)
