  • Congratulations BBB!!! I know just how hard it is to find work in this climate and I'm so pleased for you.

Awww! Thank you, you will all have me blushing next.

I did try really hard, signed up with agencies, checked their e-mail alerts every day, checked local paper, national papers, job sites, including the government one, handed out letters on spec, sometimes walking around, some by post, sent out CV's, talked to family, friends and neighbours, who sometimes got tip off's about jobs, only managed to get one part-time job at Xmas which has luckily turned permanent, and now this one! Must be a year since I was gainfully employed, so I still can't quite believe I have now got 40 hpw.

I hope it sinks in when I start working....

    Best wishes

  • Well done BBB! You must be sooo chuffed.

Small successes on ebay and Amazon plus returning bits and bobs not needed/faulty from Christmas stuff has netted perhaps £45 which is handy, and got paid for work done so long ago I'd almost forgotten about it, which is lovely. But the taxman cometh on 31st jan so I need to keep that aside and think about July too. New school stuff has been a major spend too tho shoes in sale were an amazing result, so the dearer ones I ordered (in 3 sizes!) can go back, also lovely.

I'm finding this thread really inspiring and supportive, thanks everyone. All the different stories and approaches are so interesting!

Thank you very much CR, I am running out of words here, very pleased to have your positive response.

And it's so motivating to see how hard you are working towards saving. You've a lot more to juggle than me, so very well done!

  • Great news Bessie, what a great start to the year!

Just got £100 for changing bank accounts and £32 Topcashback, but need to buy a new fridgefreezer so that's more than wiped that out. Such is life!:D

    Hello WTDW

Thank you again. New year, new job, new savings goal. Someone up there must like me....

Never mind about the freezer, it's one of those bumps in the road. Last year our washing machine of 9 years gave up on us - big white spark shot across the drum after OH 'fixed it' for the third time, so I put my foot down and got a new one!

My partner and i are saving for a deposit, so this thread sounds super! BUT, How on earth can you save £12,000 a year????

We've just rented a big house too, and i'm feeling i went ahead with my heart instead of my head. Its going to be expensive to live here :/

Everyone has different targets so don't be discouraged - that's just the name of the thread :) I'm trying to save just over half that and already worried I might be struggling a little but it's such good motivation. I'm doing it through saving salary, second job and budgeting well. It appears everybody has different approaches.

I'm also saving for a house deposit and didn't start for ages because the amount you need is generally quite intimidating. However I think this thread really helps with the "baby steps" :)

I'm also paying expensive rent as I'm in London. There's always a way out, but just think about the other ways you can cut back.

Don't you need £1500 minimum for the first 3 months to qualify for the £125 reward? I'm sure I read that somewhere.....

Ahh I'm not sure about the switching reward sorry - I only know this works for the regular saver account.

Thanks for the encouragement BBB! I agree, there will always be setbacks, and at least while we're saving, we have a bit of rainy day money to fall back on. And my freezer will be an investment as I will be able to cook and freeze, and not pay out for ready meals! :D
    Save £12k in 2022 thread #7:

    Save £10,000 Jan-May 2022 THEN RETIRE!!
Final total for (half) year: -£4,000
  • I too like others on here am saving for a house deposit. I seem to hit a brick wall with savings but am being extra frugal this year and having a strong goal is going to help me to save.

I am also currently out of work as my last contract ended at Christmas, feel like a lemming waiting to hear back from temp agencies, I contact them on an almost daily basis but it feels like I'm going nowhere fast!

Walks with OH, cat cuddles and cheapy meals in the slow cooker are keeping me sane this week! It's also great to come on here and see what everyone is up to. :)

Car insurance refund came through as expected £97.xx Rounded this up to £100 and paid in to my regular saver. I'm not allowed to pay any more in until 1st Feb now (max £250/month).

Keeping an eye on ISA and savings rate as need to open another account. Starting my new job on Monday and should get a pay cheque around 25th month. Depending on how that looks (probably have emergency tax to contend with!) I'm hoping to have a lump sum of around £1k to put somewhere.

Also sold a couple of items on ebay and made £110 after postage. It's my OH birthday this weekend and we're going for an expensive dinner as a treat. This money will pay most of the bill :)
