Congrats to all with babies on the way! And your twin grandchildren Susanne - how wonderful.

My savings for July are £886.90. Although it's less than I was saving in the first half of the year, I'm quite pleased as I've less work coming in now. And I'm getting close to my year target.

With a bit more time on my hands at home, I've taken my first real steps into growing fruit & veg. I dug over one of my garden borders last autumn and put in a couple of gooseberry bushes. Then in March I planted raspberry canes, spinach, spring onions, and potatoes in pots and sacks. A funny combination I know, but I picked things that seemed easy to grow and might save me some money.

Well this month I've had good harvests of potatoes, spinach and gooseberries. Because I put the potatoes in sacks with compost I don't think I've saved a lot of money over and above planting costs. But they taste a lot nicer than shop bought, and now that I've had some success I'll probably try planting potatoes directly in the garden next time which will be more economical. Unfortunately slugs got at the spring onions, and the raspberry canes will take until next year to be properly established and good cropping. But the spinach and gooseberries certainly seem to be saving me money. The spinach was just 69p for seeds and about £2.50 for a bag of manure from the garden centre which I dug into the ground. The spinach is abundant and it grows more and more as I cut it, so we've been having it virtually everyday with our evening meal (inc in curries) and in baking. Freezer is packed out with spinach cheese and potato pasties.

Sorry if I'm rambling on about fruit & veg. But I really enjoy hearing everyone's savings news. And I want to say WELCOME to new savers joining the thread.

Congratulations Susanne. Twins, how wonderful and I hope all goes well with the one on the way. And congrats to Lippy too.

Well today we discovered how expensive grandchildren can be and the little one isn't going to be here until January! We agreed to pay for the pram/pushchair for the baby and have parted with £350
Never mind. £50 in the baby fund and £200 in the S&S ISA and First Direct regular saver. There will probably be no more savings this month but we will see.

Can I join in and say thank you to slowlyfading for all your work on this thread, you are a diamond.

AS a mother of twins, one thing I did in the months running up to the birth was stockpile nappies in different sizes while they were Bogof or heavily reduced. This way I never had to pay full price for a packet in the first 6-12 months as I could wait between offers using up what I had. Saved me loads.

I also had twins after a first single birth. Planned on reusing everything not buying anything new second time, but with twins had to buy some things (buying a twin Pram was very expensive), tried to borrow/get second hand what I could. I also had the expense of a sofabed for the nursery (which was out spare bedroom) as we needed a place for people like my mum who came to visit could sleep.

they are 19 now and still complain that I pinch pennies. But of course I am paying for 2x university so I just ignore them.

  • Good morning all,

Thank you so much to all of you for the good wishes. The twins are doing incredibly well and I have already posted 2 parcels to them in the last week. I do need to get a grip!:D

They are both boys and as we skipped a generation (my brother and I only have daughters), they are a very welcome addition to the family. As a cricket fanatic, I plan on teaching them the delights of the game as soon as they are old enough :D:D:D! The birth was completely normal at 39 weeks and they are growing at 300 to 400 grams a week.

I do need to get back on track with savings ............. will make a concerted effort from today, promise!

    Happy saving everyone,

  • Well July has been good to me, off on holiday for 3 weeks and I paid 3 months advertising in local paper, still saved £2,603 on top of that. Balance of savings has leaped from £5,497 to £8,100!! Another £2,603 for August would maybe put a smile on my face but got van insurance to pay, which I pay in a lump sum so £2,000 looks more realistic so hopefull this time next month the balance is over £10,000!! Feel like I'm finally getting somewhere after Julys leap in savings!

Following on from this im upto about £8,400, with £1000 of expenses yet to come this month but £2500 of income so should be very close to that £10,000 mark at end of August but this is taking into account i have invested £1,000!! So went from £8,100 down to £7,100 on first of August and now upto £8,400 from there so looks like could be from £7,100 up to £10k this month. The weather has been very kind and i have been very frugal! :j
