I ended up not opening an ISA, but a home saver type account. It seemed better for what I wanted it for :) So I have a small S/O for £200 per month going into that, then will top it up as and when I can. I figure that way I don't need to overstretch myself and if something breaks or needs to be replaced, I don't have to worry too much :) baby steps indeed! I feel very positive though :D

We had to buy a new fryer yesterday as ours fused twice, and killed the electric. Also the element in the cooker has died so we are waiting for the replacement part and agency to send the electrician guy to fit it. We had to replace the fryer else it meant only using a hob and microwave and I'm a bit limited on ideas for those! haha

    Hi guys,

Just thought I would pop in and say that I may have to leave this challenge... all for good reason though... I've put in an offer on a flat... so hopefully everything will go through ok and I will be emptying my savings into someone else's account!!

I'll be so sorry to leave.. this thread and all the lovely people on it, have really helped me reach my dream of owning my own place! I'll keep on updating until I get the keys in my hands - got horrible stuff like survey and searches fees to save up for now!

Thank you all for you encouragement and support and in particular to Slowlyfading for all the hard work she puts in to this thread! x

Congratulations on the flat! That is very exciting news. I am looking forward to the day I can also say I have put a deposit on a house/flat. You will still need to save for emergency funds and house improvements so I wouldn't say goodbye to this thread yet.

Given how busy June has been (music festival, friends birthdays, weekends away!), I am surprised to have been able to save £1100 so far this month!

Really pleased, as i've smashed it this month - total of £2900.31 saved, bringing me to £9118.50 at the halfway point. Things are likely to get tighter financially from September onwards, to time to make hay while the sun shines :)

Well done everyone, and good luck LealeaV for the flat
  • Hi all
I'm back after some time away from this site - will get my figures sorted out so I can give you a updated total by the end of month, but popped I. To say I earned £ 76.50 from my job last night - all going in the pot!

Exactly same as me, do you have a weather depending job? Iv been cracking on but spending more than I should be on getting house upto scratch...should be saving what I have in past 5 months in the next 2 so will soon get near my target before the dark nights kick in! As much as I love long hour summers earning plenty there's something about relaxing at home at 6pm and its dark outside...maybe I'm just nuts haha.

  • Late joiner here :) I have just started saving again, having just finished my degree, and am hoping to save £3900 by newyears (including interest on savings!)

My budget leaves me about £75 per week (after taking away from my £1470 pay rent, bills, student loan) does this sound like a lot to the money savers here? Could I be aiming to spend a lower amount?

  • Silver lining I would say that is plenty, however how much do you earn/ how much is your surplus income. That is what i would go with. If I have a £100 surplus one week I'd try and get by with £50-60 spends however if I bang in the overtime and get paid for a few jobs at once and so surplus is £600 odd I would allow myself £150 maybe to treat myself.

Aslong as living within your means and saving what you can you are heading in the right direction!

  • Thanks YoungBusinessman. That budget is my surplus income left over from £1470 after saving £600pm (as well as outgoings of rent, bills etc) so I feel that it's money well earned and that I should allow myself some treats with it. I think if I aim for lower some weeks that would enable bigger treats other weeks, and that might make it all the more easier :)

No, just a month where everything has gone right for once :)

It has been kind of like the reverse of those frustrating months where things keep cropping up and you end up spending lots of cash - this time there have been lots of little payments turning up (individually they're all quite small, a few tens of quid at the most, but add them up and it's a decent chunk of cash) and i'd budgeted for some bigger spends that turned out to be unnecessary. So i've been stuffing all the cash into savings :D
  • Either way more than 70% to target and only half way through, thats brilliant!
