Hello all. :D Exciting times - just cleared off my loan and the savings can now really begin! I have an appointment with my bank on Friday to discuss opening an ISA... not really sure which one I should be looking at. :S

The plan is to start with a small amount in the ISA, keeping a pot of money in a different savings account for emergenices (we have 3 bunnies but none have insurance, so we need a pot for vet bills), then our current account for bills...I'd love to be able to get my utility bills down but I'm not sure it's going to happen :( currently paying £80 p/m on my gas alone!

    Great achievement Amr547! :j

Baby steps remember. Start 'paying' yourself by d/d/ to an ISA, say, at least for the amount you were having to pay to your loan, and you won't even notice it's gone. Then you can look at other ways to save, and boost it when you can.

    Good work

I told a lie in my last post. I will be adding more to the pot this month £210 to be exact :)

Hopefully I won't need to dig it back out for the holiday.

    Hi guys,

Just thought I would pop in and say that I may have to leave this challenge... all for good reason though... I've put in an offer on a flat... so hopefully everything will go through ok and I will be emptying my savings into someone else's account!!

I'll be so sorry to leave.. this thread and all the lovely people on it, have really helped me reach my dream of owning my own place! I'll keep on updating until I get the keys in my hands - got horrible stuff like survey and searches fees to save up for now!

Thank you all for you encouragement and support and in particular to Slowlyfading for all the hard work she puts in to this thread! x

Awww Lealea that is great news about your new abode but not good that you are thinking of leaving here. :(

Maybe you can come back once all the outgoings are covered. You will need to save for a housing emergency fund! :)
    Mortgage at 12/07/2022 = £175,000
    Mortgage today = £161,690.76
    300 271 payments to go.

  • LeaLeaV, good luck with that, i know the costs soon start to spiral upwards quicker than savings do anyway, 6 months after buying im slowly getting back saving again!! Not going to be near my original target but still giving it a go as close as i can. Iv been paid for a job today(day ended at 10a.m aswel and iv got all of this weekend off, boost!!) so savings have gone over £6,000. Iv been banging in the hours the past few weeks due to being a man down at work so next payday should be a really good savings boosting one, should be hitting £9,000 in July!! Is it just me or is the thread alot quieter than a few months back?! Lets keep going folks, not even halfway yet :D

  • Congratulations LealeaV - hope everything goes soothly and you will be very happy in your new home! That's the whole point of saving - not for money in the bank per se, but for the means of achieving desires.

Paltry savings this month - just a token 100 quid here. But I'm also tucking away another £850 in my interest free credit card account , earning interest until I need to clear it in January. I had an expensive May :o buying new bedroom furniture, a bike and a weekend away!

Finally got round to opening my new ISA. I had opened one in December with ING which I planned to use this yet but as they have been taken over by Barclays they are not doing the ISAs this year. So new one open with Nationwide with £100 tucked away and £100 to go in on Tuesday (payday) which will get it started.

It is looking unlikely that I will hit my target as I decided to pay for a new kitchen (almost 3k) but it needed doing so I don't mind and my new kitchen is much better set up for cooking and baking an on top of that it is more energy efficient, with induction hob and LED lights instead of a fluorescent strip :-)

I'm having a tough time this month. I've lost my mojo completely. I seem to be going nowhere fast, most of my extra income sources have dried up :( I still have students but only have bookings for 2 students between now and the end of the month. They are both here for that duration but it's highly annoying that I am only hosting at 50% capacity.

Just had to buy a new vaccum cleaner too as my other one died. It's still under guarantee so it will be replaced but I'm fed up of it, it's the second replacement in a year. So I've bought a dyson, my first ever, for £149 minus the money (£50) I will get for selling the replacement VC. It has a 5 year warranty so hopefully this will stop me buying a new VC what seems like every year! £99 for a dyson, bargain?
