"Fine" from Asda on Remembrance Sunday

Hi all, first time poster.
On 11th November me and my fiancee went into town for the Remembrance Sunday service, as did hundreds of others. As such, all the local public car parks were full and we ended up parking on the Asda car park.

Afterwards we stopped in town for a little while before returning home and have today received a fine through the post for £70, or £45 if we pay before 5th December. It says if we don't pay, we'll suffer legal action.

Technically, they're absolutely correct. We did stay in the car park for more than the allowed period, however we assumed given the special day and the fact all the public car parks were very busy that we wouldn't have a problem parking in the Asda car park. Other people were having to do the same so I assume some will also have been there for more than the allowed time also and will have received this notice.

I've been made aware of this forum's existence and so wanted advice. Do I have a leg to stand on or should I just pay up? It's my fiancee's car so she's worried and just wants to pay up but personally I feel like Asda are taking advantage of the fact we had little choice but to park there in order to attend the Remembrance Day service and I would've hoped for a little more decorum for that one day.

It's not a fine and you can ignore them.

Whilst I've read that point on here and on the MSE website, is it as easy as that? I wouldn't want a court date coming through my door! Also, would we have any issues going back there in future in that car?

What company is in the "fine" paperwork? When you find out, do a search on here for them and look at the threads.

Ignore it. Do nothing.

I gather this is private parking company, so ignore them, you haven't broken the law so it is not a fine, just an invoice begging you to pay an illegal penalty. You were a little naughty parking there whilst not being a customer, but that doesn't equate to £70 , so it's not legal. I bet it's town & country parking who have done this yes ?

You would certainly not ignore court papers but it won't come to that. There are better chances of winning the lottery then a private parking company dare take you to court!. The fact is you just ignore, ignore and then ignore some more til they give up, which they will. Keep coming here and update your thread(this one) when they send you anything and several here will help you to ignore the empty threats.

I'm at work at the moment so haven't seen the paperwork so I'll update once I've seen it and know all the details ie who the sender is.
taffy, I can't remember but we may have actually gone into Asda at some point that day on the way back. If not, We've definitely spent thousands there over time!

If you don't want to make it too easy you could scrunch the invoice into a ball and try to throw it into the bin from twenty feet away? Or you could use it to make a Stegosaurus?

Apparently the issuer is TCP Town Centre Parking, if that helps?
