I've just read this entire thread (and I should have served up tea some time ago, but was gripped), and have to say I am amazed and shocked at anyone who makes excuses for the ignorant folk who cannot even spare one second of their valuable time to say thank you.
This (manners) is what distinguishes us from wild animals. I expect even cave dwellers knew how to acknowledge assistance from a fellow human being.
If we want this society of ours to retain (or should that be regain?) civilisation, we really need to address the reasons why basic politeness is dying out.
There is already a big problem of unruly children, adolescents (and beyond) to be sorted out. Why on earth not say thank you? It makes the recipient feel good, makes for a friendly encounter not a threatening one, and makes the world go round.
Hang on... "it makes the recipient feel good" - no, surely we are not so selfish that we can't stand the idea of anyone apart from our own miserable selves having a good experience?I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I work in a supermarket and I've got to say that some of the customers I serve are extremely rude.
The worst thing is when you pack a trolley full of shopping for a customer and the customer then doesn't even have the decency to say 'thank you'.
And there are loads of customers who seem to think that just because I've packed the first bag for them, I'll pack all of their shopping...yeah right! I'm not paid to pack people's shopping and hold up queues. I'll help the customer as much as I can but I refuse to pack by myself while the customer stands there arms folded watching me (and yes that does actually happen, you'd be surprised at how often that happens).
The customers are even rude to each other! Sometimes when I've finished serving a customer but they are still packing their things I wait until they've finished before serving the next customer. And on some occassions the next customer has been rude enough to say "Come on hurry up, we haven't got all day!". Can you believe their nerve? I mean how would these people like it if someone was to say that to them?0 -

We are all paid to do a job in some form or other. We should all do our job with a smile (even when someone is really p'ing us off!). I have been shouted at, sworn at and even once threatened with a chair over my head in my job. Daily I colleagues asking me the most stupid question about something that they should really know. I just have to grin and bear it and not let myself become bitter.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Poppy9 wrote:Sorry I would say yes you are paid to pack the bags. Most of the big supermarkets will tell you that their checkout operators will help you pack. The customer certainly isn't paid to pack their own shopping. Is it not enough that we have to cart it from the shelves, unload it onto the belt and then they want us to put it in bags ourselves. Dept. stores which are equally busy don't expect us to pack ourselves. The job of the checkout operator is disappearing as now they want us to scan the stuff ourselves. Next they will be asking us to restock the shelves:rolleyes: Quite honestly aside from times when I have a bad back I appreciate the help the checkout assistants give me with packing. If they offer I always say yes please. Nice to have 5 minutes till I have to load into trolley and then load into car and then get home and unload and unpack. I always smile and thank them for their help. If I want to fold my arm, I will fold them. Checkout assistants often fold them while you are packing the bags yourself and they are waiting for the next customer.
Actually I agree with the original post here, I used to work in a supermarket and it annoyed me too that when I offered to help them park their bags some customers assume that you will pack it all. And whats worse is when some customers make you pack all their bags whilst they just stand there and then have the nerve to comment how I packed items together wrongly. I had one who shouted at me for packing fruit with veg, and then packed fresh meat with the fruit instead. And during busy periods it can be very hectic trying to pack a trolly's worth of shopping whilst scanning it at the same time, and it usually take at least double the time.Titch0 -
at the ened of the day..... if you the customer is polite, then the shop worker is also likely to be polite.....
how much effot does it take to say 'Please' or 'Thank you'
I always, always say P's n Q's that show i was brought (dragged up), but it works.......
I agree the person coming through the door you have opened might not say anything, but you saying 'Thanka You' as they pass, makes them think. uuuhhh, should i have said something.....
there was a film recently called 'pay it forward', whilst i am not saying it always works.... in a majority of the time it does.....
it also follows..... dont assume you get everything for nothing.... ie bag packing.....smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Your missing my point. Iif the checkout operator is not paid to pack bags who is? The customer isn't. Checkout involves checking the goods out of the store. To get the goods out of the store they need to go in bags. Therefore Checkout Operator should provide this service. I reiterate. Customers are not paid to pack bags.
When you shop in Debenhams, M&S, HoF, Woolies etc. do you pack your own bags. No. Ok it may take longer but if customers want to pack themselves they could just say "I'll pack". I love visiting the US because the supermarkets do all this for you. In some they even offer to unload your trolley. All with a smile and a greeting.
You can't expect customers to be polite if the shop workers are sullen and off hand. You get back what you give in most cases. I have to say I always make a big point of thanking sullen, rude assistants loudly hoping they will get the message.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
