Some people

OK I'm 40, got that one off my chest, and gives you an idea.

At the butchers, was on my way out, it was raining, three elderly people heading in. I could have gone out making them wait, but being a nice guy, well I think so, waited patiently for them to cross the last couple of yards and enter.

Guess how many said thanks, or even aknowledge my existance?

One woman and two blokes.

This winds me up no end ,I taught my kids and my grandkids in turn to respect their elders ......as I was taught, but when these same people can't even say thank you it's very annoying and they wonder why they should respect them.

but as I say to them, two wrongs don't make a right and most are polite and respectful back.

I know what you mean, I have often done the polite thing like opening doors for people, let them get by with a trolley ect and often get no thanks, It isn't just old people, young are just as bad. My wife often tells me to stop waiting for people to get by before I move with the trolley. Yesterday I noticed a large sticker on a chaps jumper, I said to him, that he has a large stick on his back and pull it off, had a laugh about how it got there, but no thanks.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

Rude people are everywhere - rudeness is most definitely not a symptom of old age! Eg in Boots in Woking whilst looking at the shampoo I stood back to let a girl/woman (early 20's) with a pushchair past. It was quite obvious that this was the reason I moved. She & pushchair then stopped in front of me! I told her why I had stood back and that she was now in my way. Her reply was that I shouldn't have stood back. It was quite obvious she had stopped there simply to annoy me as she wasn't interested in what was on the shelves...she just stopped walking.

I have taken to saying "You're welcome" to people who don't say thanks or smile or in any way acknowledge my making an effort for their convenience. They invariably say "eh what?" - then I just say "oh sorry, I thought you thanked me for stopping to let you pass in front of me". Ignoramouses should wear a badge or armband then you can choose to let doors slam in their grumpy faces...

As others have said it is not limited to old people. I would always hold a door open and the one that annoys me is a large group of people that do not even take the weight of the door they just walk on past, eventually you get bored and just let the door go at which point it hits someone and they look at you as if you have done something wrong .. pratts! The worst case was a man in a wheel chair, I held the door open for him and he thanked me using the words 'I am not totally incapable you know'... I just said 'Don't mention it'.

I don't think that (most) people are genuinely ignorant I think they are just living in their own little worlds and do not necessarily see what is going on around them.

I have also stood there like a lemon holding a door for ages and do not think more than one person has ever thanked me.

BTW I do say thanks if someone does this for me.:):):)

Elderly people (and hate to say this but women) are the worst for ignoring you if you hold a door open. Even worse they ignore kids who are obviously making an effort. I always comment in a loud voice about the absence of a thank you and how you shouldn't follow their rude example. Today I held the door for a gent coming out of the post office behind me. He just shoved me without a word of thanks :(

But as someone said its not confined to old people. Again its female (blooming heck I'm going have a gender reassignment) shop assistants. Is it really too much trouble to say £9.50 PLEASE or to stop talking to the girl on the other till and look at the customer? If they catch me on a bad day they get a "a please or a thank you would have been nice and may even have enhanced my shopping experience", you should see their faces. If I see a supervisor or manager on my way out of the shop I tell them if they have been particularly rude. I used to love one of Iceland shops in town. The staff were so lovely. If you asked for the special offer - which is all I ever bought in there - they would always go and look for some for you or point you in the direction of other bargains. On the till they passed the time of day and packed while you were getting your purse out etc. When I saw the manager prowling the store one day I stopped him to tell him what a wonderful crew he had assembled. He said he thought I was going to complain as they never get good feed back. Now I do try to give positive feedback if very good service especially in House of Fraser as staff often get given a £5 gift voucher :)

Oh for crying out loud, why is someone else knocking old people? Has the UK completely lost respect for things that matter?

I think it stinks that anyone believes they need to be thanked for holding a door open.

I think the point of the original post was that there were three RUDE old people - so the rude ones were being knocked, not old people in general.

Why do you think it doesn't matter to say thank you when someone has made an effort on a person's behalf and in doing so shown them respect and acknowledged their presence? Good manners given deserve good manners to be returned - that is respect of the other person and it is important. Would you prefer that it becomes a non-issue if we as a nation drop our manners totally so that the word "thank you" becomes obsolete?
