Well done Cameron!
Talks on a new European Union budget have collapsed after David Cameron won German support in a row with France about his demands for more cuts in spending.

The Prime Minister accused Brussels of 'living in a parallel universe' and said there could not be a 'deal at any cost.'

Speaking at the end of the failed summit Mr Cameron said: "We're not going to be tough on budgets at home just to come here and sign up to an increase.

"Frankly the deal on the table was just not good enough. It wasn't good enough for Britain and neither was it good enough for a number of countries.
What are labour gonna whinge about now!?

Talks have now collapsed. Wonder how different it would have been if Sarkozy was still there? Doubt Merkel would have sided with Cameron then....again, politics takes hold and suddenly, Merkel is our allie, and against the French!

GD. Mr Cameron has appeared to have cleverly got out of a tight corner. By addressing his concerns at the cost of running the EU bureaucracy rather than at individual countries. So has garnered support.

While all EU countries are facing austerity measures. Brussels has made no attempt to cut pay or benefits or expenses.

It looks like the Tories are leading the way in Europe for once. That rather beggars up the BBC/Guardian narrative about how the Conservatives hanging out for a good deal loses influence for the UK in the EU. It rather seems like the reverse is true.

So maybe there is something in this whole 'hanging out for a better deal' thing. Hmm that's not very snappy. We need a better word. What about negotiat? Latin for transact. We could bung an 'e' on the end to Anglicise it a bit.

What has Labour got to do with it?

Mr Cameron will go down the road that he has set out in life and will not listen to anyone other than himself.

The EU needs a reality check - they were bidding for bigg budget increases whilst the member countries (and more importantly the people in them) are tightening their belts.

Labour would have rolled over and increased the budget without voicing the slightest issue with it.
  • Personally I believe Camerons trump card for winning the next election is a referendum on Europe.

It remains to be seen if and when he decides to play it.

Apparently the way to have a voice at the heart of Europe is to keep quiet and do as you're told.

I think that his hopes of winning the next General Election are equal to the card that he holds, namely the Joker...

No idea on the substance of the negotiation but I have no doubt that as usual we are bending over and dropping trousers exactly as instructed but the Tories definitely seem to be managing the news agenda better this time. Interestingly the BBC are also running the ukip fostering story. I wonder if they are feeling slightly less sure of themselves than in the past.
    I think....
