  • Hi StressedSteph

Been lurking on your diary and subscribed a while back. I completely understand you guarding your budget and your annoyance at the unscheduled bills. Today for me, my car had a service (£140) and MOT but only went and failed, costing an additional £170 for the necessary repairs. It seems like one step forward and two steps back at times doesn't it? We will get there though :o

Can I just say though, your energy bill seems extremely high.. I'm with BG which I consider expensive, how come yours is that high? You may have to send some time in the darkness :rotfl:

    Bye for now xx

Glad its not just me that struggles with the un-scheduled bills.
Its just so annoying, as you think you have EVERYTHING accounted for in the budget and then companies dream up new ways to charge you money
Sorry to hear you have the extra MOT bill, eugh cars are so expensive to keep going. Wish I could manage without one.

My electric bill is high. I know over Christmas our boiler broke down so we had to use the Electric immersion heater to heat the water for a few days, but can't imagine it only being that, thats cost the extra.
My oven range is electric and the children have a terrible habit of lighting up the house like the blackpool illuminations. I do nag them to turn stuff off, but think I need to be abit better at making sure stuff is turned off.
Other than that, I do run the tumble drier every day . As soon as the weather gets abit better I will put the washing on the line.
Have tried drying stuff outside in the winter and it just does'nt seem to work. :o

Thanks for reading my diary, speak to you soon xx

Hi Steph, What about buying a couple airers instead of using the tumble drier? Is your home fairly warm if so might be worth a go? I have radiator Airers because we only have central heating and also a big airer that i can carry in and out, i don't use the tumbler hardly at all now, took a bit of getting used too though!

  • My tumble dryer is on every day as well and like you, the kids 'forget' about the lights. Earlier last year BG put my electric up from 88 to 101 pm and wouldn't reduce it so I started switching everything that I could off at the wall. I've just have my annual review and its gone back down to 88. Not a massive saving but better than nothing, and proof that we can reduce our usage. I suppose your gas usage will be minimal though given that you cook on electric. X

    Thanks for replying.

Out of debt at last = I will look into getting the airers - I am sure that the tumble drier is the main thing thats costing the money.

Money Mayhem = Hi, thanks for replying. We don't have any gas, we have just the electric and oil central heating. We live in rural Dorset so are lacking extra stuff like gas and cable etc.

I am going to have to look at our usage. An extra £60 per month kills off alot of the money saving I have already done, which is annoying. but I guess I need to change that attitude and look at it more that we would have been even worse off if I had'nt been cutting costs elsewhere.

Debt busting really is a hard battle

I don't want to get my bill at all now. My tumble drier is on every day. During the summer months it is rarely used, but in winter it is difficult to get everything dried on the airer.

  • Hi Clearmydebts

Been chatting to hubby about drying options for the clothes. We do have a utility room but it is packed out and not even much room to have the old fashioned airer that hangs near the ceiling.

We have such large quantities of washing that, like you, we would have big issues trying to get such large loads dried.

I also worry about damp issues with wet clothes all round the house?.

I often see peoples washing out on dry days in the winter, but I really don't see how it dries. I tried putting mine out one sunny day in December and it felt just a wet after 6 hours on the line :o.

We have no radiators downstairs, only underfloor heating, so hanging stuff on radiators isn't an option.

Hmmm back to the drawing board me thinks ;)

I am quite paranoid about the kids clothes being properly aired so what I do is air them on the airer for 1-2 days and then finish them off in the drier. That way they come out softer and aired but don't need to be in the drier for as long.

I probably won't hang out washing until March time. I have tried during the winter, but find the same as you, they are still wet. I love hanging them out in the summer. They feel so fresh when I take them in! I probably still blast them for 5 mins in the tumble drier though!

I think I will try the 5 minute blast after stuff has dried outside. I have often given up hanging washing outside, I love the smell, but hate the cardboard feel clothes often get. The quick blast in the tumble probably gets rid of that. :T

Yes, the quick blast is great for softening clothes. There is nothing worse than cardboard towels when you are trying to dry yourself after a shower. Lol :)
