Depends on who it is and where their going. Usually I just say sorry I can't or if they keep trying dates say I have lots on and can't afford it

if you get invited to meals around xmas with clubs, groups not family where you have to pay yourself and dont want to go how do you tell people?

    are you honest?
    say you cant afford it?
    say you are busy?

    does anyone have this?

I just say No thanks, I'm not going.

I am a very unsociable person. I spend a lot of time at work and so I like to spend my free time at home with my cats. Some would call me a hermit :p

The dog is my reason ..... I have to come home & feed & walk her and after I've done that, I've no desire to go out again (especially in the winter!) and am more than happy tucked up in the house with her and the cats!

I do go to the odd meal when it's my team only - but it means taking a minimum of a 1/2 day off work so I can give Maisie a decent walk / spend time with her before going out so it really is very rare (once this year!) - I think most people think I'm odd at my work anyway!

When I worked and was single I used to just say, sorry I won't be able to make it but hope you have a great time. DS is quite a good excuse now, no baby sitter, too expensive etc.

"Sorry I am going to have to give it a miss this year, but I hope you all have a great time - I'll look forward to hearing what you all got up to."
I am sure there are many people who would like to give some of these meals/functions a miss.

Yes, a 'Previous Engagement' usually does the trick! and its either for 'Family' or Charidee - so you cannot get out of it!
  • why doesnt honesty pay in these situations?

i always said i dont want to go, i dont want to spend money i cant really afford to spend.

those ask and get lied to with a poor reply such as i have to go to another engagement seem to be let off as if its satisfactory, but yet say you dont want to and you offend? WHY? its the truth why cant that be respected instead of being lied to?
