Couldn't you have an emergency appointment or prior engagement? or expecting visitors and can't really put them off again kind of thing?

No, if annual leave wasn't booked before knowing the date of the meeting/party, then it can't be done now. It would have to be an absolute emergency on the morning of the meeting/party, ie death, to avoid it.

Maybe it won't be as bad as I'm expecting and I might even enjoy it

YOUR lack of sisterly duty???????? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: other way around hun - your sis is showing a complete lack of understanding about your finances and to announce to people that she paid for half your meal takes my breath away! if my sis had done that she would have been 'wearing her half'!!!
Exactly, the way i see it is that if she really wanted me there then she would have picked a place to eat that i could afford.
Meritaten, it wasn't even just a case of her telling the table she was paying for me, she actually asked, very loudly, how many glasses of wine i had had because it was going on her bill!

what a cheeky mare! - equally cheeky response
"Exactly as many as it takes for me to forget I'm related to you...so that should be about ten "

My usual lines when I dont want to go to do's (and I never do ) are either
    " I dont do social"
    or
"you're asking me?" - this should however not be said in a slightly wavering manner - more in the tone of voice you would use to say " you do know youve just driven through a field?"

and the occasional attempt to get me to be "jolly" at work - (even if its work time) has resulted in.... " If its obligatory to attend then could you just put that in writing "

    feel free to borrow these
