I genuinely can't think of anything I wouldn't want to receive, I just love presents :)

And, with an attitude like that, I am sure people love buying you gifts!

(Just to be absolutely clear that ^ is a genuine comment and NOT sarcasm).

Now my exBiL was an awful person to buy gifts for. He had very firm ideas about what did, and what did not, constitute an acceptable gift.

Clothes were a complete no-no. He wouldn't even OPEN a 'squashy' gift

I'm 36 and would say I'm normally pretty easy to buy for.

My Husband gets me the same every year new PJ's, Calender, Dressing Gown, slippers, Cook Book, Diary and maybe a bottle of perfume. He has good taste and I trust him!

I love Soap and Glory but last year I still had loads left from the previous year so told Hubby, Best friend and baby brother not to get me any only for my Mum and my other brother to by me loads. I reckon I have about 10 years supply of it!

I love gardening but last year I got one of the worst presents ever a china watering can!

as a 31 year old male, do NOT buy me lynx- i used it up to being about 18 and never again after that. i wont use it and will feel guilty as i will always use gifts.]

mugs, they are discouraged at work and i have 2 cupboards full

gift sets that contain lager- i dont drink it

if you insist on buying me clothes- plain dark smart jumpers i can wear for work are ideal, especially while its cold, dress code at work is quite tight

  • The only thing I've ever been upset to receive was when my partners step mum gave me back the same gift I gave her the year before, I got very upset as she had just taken the gift to bits and gave me 4 items out of the set in a gift box I'd also given her as well. I'm pretty sure she'll give me the rest of the set this year for Christmas. They're very well off too and she's always given me something like this, I'd rather they didn't bother at all as it makes me feel inadequate.

You could start a pass the gift with it - give her back the bits she gave you last year this year, but exchange one item for a different one or just take one out ;)

Haha don't tempt me, my Mum said I should just give her it back, I'm not that brave! Just means I don't have any input or give any money towards her gift if the OH wants to get her anything so she'll end up with some corkers from now on with his tastes. :D

  • Very interesting post. I don't know whether it is a sign that I am difficult to buy for but I get asked every year what I want.

It is normally people who don't know me very well that buy me the things that end up in the charity shop. I hate receiving toiletries because they never get used. I always feel really guilty and wonder how long I need to keep hold of them before I give them away. There are several reasons. The main one is, that 9 times out of 10 it is bath stuff and I normally have showers. I also suffer with psoriasis so I am wary of trying anything new. I never buy anyone toiletries either unless they ask for them.

I don't like receiving physical books either. I love to read but I use my kindle so don't want physical books anymore. My husband has a habit of buying me random books that I would never choose even though he knows I love thrillers.

I love my Willow tree figures but apart from that I don't like ornaments.
  • What an amusing thread!

I think if the buyers at Boots were reading this, then maybe they'd rethink their purchasing strategy! Odd how so many of us dislike the gift sets!

I do include myself in that, as I think they're a bit of a cop out. In my mind I see (my MIL) rushing into Boots on the weekend before Christmas, grabbing some 3 for 2 gift sets, and chucking one my way... I am at an age (37) where I've settled on my cleansers/moisturisers/make up etc and don't want to change them (without sounding ungrateful!).

I'd really like vouchers towards my haircut or from the beauty salon I occasionally use - as a mum to two young children, I really value such gifts. A magazine subscription would also be lovely...

I really don't want people to waste their money and we have asked that the adults in our family with children don't buy each other gifts this year; we are only buying for the children. For the adults without children, we are still buying, so our children give to everyone, aswell as receiving a gift.

Gosh, Christmas has become very complicated!
