Since I have no housing benefit or any other benefit other than JSA I have not needed to use any site and the only one I look at is

I only claim JSA and I was instructed I must sign up to GG and the Jobmatch website.

As far as I am aware you only have to USE the UJM not sign up or give them the power to snoop on you
Hmm, I wonder why it varies at different job centres, but then I remember they don't seem to know what they're doing in general anyway. I wish I'd read some of the posts on here before I followed their instructions but I'm not sure how they'd have responded if I'd told them no to a 'mandatory' (their word) instruction.

Well I haven't so that's why I have never heard off GG and will never need to use it.
This thread is about Universal Jobmatch (UJ), which is different from the Government Gateway (GG).
I don't think you can say you will never need to use the Government Gateway.
Reading between the lines on the 'What is it?' info on the GG site, this is the early stages of getting ALL government administration online, in one place. (This will include DVLA, revenue and customs, etc.) It is pretty likely that everyone will eventually need to register with GG for something or other, and if they make it compulsory, it will effectively act as an on-line ID card, as Ratboy suggests.
Having read the GG Privacy Policy, the data management looks reasonable to me, so I don't think that there is any more risk to using that site than any other online financial service. It is a gateway, and is intended to provide secure connection to other government websites (as they are not yet integrated), but not the services themselves.
HOWEVER, it also says the following (my bold):Links to other websitesSo, registering with GG should not be feared, but a different privacy policy applies to Universal Jobmatch (as Ratboy has published earlier in thread) so that is a completely different matter.
The Government Gateway contains links to other websites, mainly those of other government departments and some third party software suppliers. The Government Gateway is not responsible for the privacy practices of any of these other sites. We encourage you to be aware of this when you leave the Government Gateway and to read the privacy statements on other websites you visit which collect personally identifiable information.
This privacy statement applies solely to information handled by the Government Gateway.0 -

.
I know the thread it about the UJM not the GG
I am still sure I will not be using it as I have no dealings with the DVLA and till I get a job no need to contact the HMRC and in the last 25 years whilst working I have never contacted the HMRC.We’ve had to remove your signature. As it stands at the moment JSA is not conditional on having a GG account. However, to use UJ you have to have a GG account - and this is why they are lying to you that you must sign up for both.0
