My main "hobby" for the past 2 years has been: sitting on my 4rse, swanning around the Internet.

    :)

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Interesting thread. Thanks OP.:)

I go dancing once a week and have a season ticket for football. Other than that I mostly spend time with friends and family and fit in as many holidays as possible. I can sew and knit but don't those regularly so I count those as skills I have.

What I'd really like to do is learn how to get the best from my phone and digital camera. I find it's a bit like having a fancy washing machine and only using one programme. I know I could do trial and error but I'd rather some structure. Any ideas?

Not really, I must confess. Shame, because I live in an area (north west England) where I could relatively easily access places of natural beauty. The idea of booting up and going for a hike has never really occurred to me, though there's no reason why I wouldn't enjoy it :)

So jealous! We live in the south-east but go to the Lake District three or four times a year for hill walking. Look up Alfred Wainright. He wrote a series of guides to the Lake District summits in the 50s and hand-illustrated them. He described 214 hills in total. We're working our way through climbing them all. Should fill a few years. Includes Scafell Pike which is the highest mountain in England. :D

    Other hobbies of mine:
    • Playing guitar
    • Shooting archery (hubby and I both do this so it's nice to have a hobby that we enjoy together)
    • Growing chilli plants
    • Photography (landscape for me, wildlife for the hubby)
    • Playing board games (good ones, not Monopoly!)

And the ideas keep on coming - thanks for sharing!

I've decided to go down two routes:

    1) gardening
    2) crafts

    Gardening:
As mentioned, I'm moving house, and will for the first time in my adult life have a little outdoor space (only an 8ft x 8ft yard). Wanting to plant little flowers and stuff (in pots and trays - got no grass). If I got really into it, would also look into growing herbs, fruits, vegetables, etc. (but don't know how far I can get with this, given space and landscape restrictions). What can a gal start doing (in the winter season), on this project? Any recommended books, websites, etc. for a complete novice? I've never even mown a lawn, let alone planted and nurtured a living organism.

Crafts: Very inspired by the more 'crafty' amongst you. My first project is going to be to 'journalise' my travels for the past 10 years in some kind of scrapbook. I've been to 11 countries in 10 years (should have listed 'travel' as a hobby, but didn't because of the sheer expense it involves!), and have kept all ticket stubs, souvenirs, programmes, flight tickets, hotel reservations, etc. Liking the idea of putting together a little visual compendium, perhaps with a few notes. My first adult passport is also due to expire, so it feels like the end of an era, and as though I can start a new chapter with my new passport, when I get it and start using it.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

    great kloana!
gardening even a tiny space is lovely! you can do as much or as little as you want to!
For advice on what you can do to get started there is a gardening thread on the forum. Just above 'Old Stylers' I think!
as for scrapbooking - sounds like you have everything you need to start your scrapbooking apart from a nice 'scrapbook' and maybe some pretty papers for background (tip - DIY stores do some lovely papers and dont mind you 'taking a sample' - enough to cover a page that is) bit of glue and you will be away! good luck with that anyway!

The thread is called 'Greenfingered Moneysaving', I couldnt for the life of me think what is was called when typing the post!
  • One of my hobbies is friendship and I'm meeting someone that I have met on this thread on Wednesday. It turns out we live near to each other. X
  • This is a great thread!

I think your hobby depends on how much time & money you can invest in it. My job takes up too much of my time, however I got into crafts & really enjoy card making. Unlike other arts & crafts you dont have to wait too long to see the results.

Evening classes or Saturday classes at a local college are a really good introduction to a hobby. Unfortunately I think the government has cut back on the funding for these. I really enjoyed silk screen printing when I did it via these courses.

I'd like to take up golf as its something both myself & OH could do together

My hobby is Bryology (study of mosses and liverworts). It's a bit like the ramblers with some science. We have meet-ups in moist places where we don't actually walk very far, and then we put stuff into paper packets to identify under the microscope when we get home. Just been on a cracking residential course on pleurocarps (stringy moss).

am dram! It's sociable, fun and groups want people to do all sorts of things, not just acting.

I saw a group not far from me and thought about going along. I fancy the idea of AmDram.
I'm not an expert but i did tread-the-boards in the past. It's true !!
I played a farmer, well not exactly a farmer i had to look after the sheep, and during the night this bright angel came out of the sky.
I was about 5 and in the Nativity.
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

...teeny-tiny polar bears that live on moss.

Did you know that moss produces sperm?
