  • My friend and I are in the same position as you OP. We have realised we watch a little too much TV and need an interest that won't break the bank and does'nt require too much artistic talent. We came across this when browsing a craft store for ideas and can't wait to get stared. We are planning to start with shoe boxes to get the hang of it and keep the cost down.

  • Depending on what he doctors have to say over the next few weeks and months I think I may be in need of a new hobby, and I'm a bit lost for ideas. I have a great deal of difficulty in maintaining more than one interest at a time, one always ends up squeezing out the others.

    Over the years I've had:

Model railway: grew out of it.
Electronics: interest waned after it became a career.
Swimming: came to an end with an ear problem.
Canoeing: could never keep up with the others in the club.
Photography: lost interest in staching away thousands of pix never to be seen again.
Fellwalking: came to an end with recurring ankle injury.
Reading: frustrating, read some very good books but I could never find anyone else who had read them to debate with.
DIY: becoming frustrating as my eyesight deteriorates, and the motivation tends to be poor if I'm doing it for the sake of it rather than necessity.
A bit of maths: I just like analysing anything and everything, but only occasionally if something piques my interest.

For the last 12 years it's been cycle touring, but I haven't been on the bike since I went for a jolly in an ambulance last August.

I just had to google this, you learn something new every day :D

    Great topic OP

    I feel there aren't enough hours in the days for everything I'd like to do. My hobbies at the moment include;

-Reading - Anything and everything! Although this kind of goes in phases. I won't read anything for weeks or months and then I'll devour printed materials like they're going out of fashion.
-Gaming - mainly MMO RPGs (massive multiplayer online role playing games :D )
    -Cardmaking/papercrafts
    -Cross stitch/Embroidery/Needlecrafts
-Crochet (am teaching myself to do this at the moment)
-Knitting (also teaching myself this cause I saw a fab project on pinterest I want to make!)
    -Sewing, bags/clothes etc
    -Swimming
    -Walking
-Days out - Mum is by herself a lot so we go out for the day, find somewhere new, pack a picninc and we're off.
-Surfing the net 'finding out' stuff.
    -Baking

I'd also love to learn to play an instrument and take some dancing lessons, line dancing maybe?

I suppose I'd describe myself as a crafter or a maker, I love looking at sites like Pinterest and thinking 'I can make that!' Problem is I'll sit down to have a look and then the whole night will pass me by as I browse :( My to-do/would-like-to-make list is about 4 miles long :rotfl: I had a conversation at work abot what we would do if we won the lottery. A colleague mentioned that they wouldn't give up work as they'd get bored. Not me, I'd be too busy shortening that list!

At the moment I'm mainly concentrating on cross stitching, not enough space for much else. It's also resonably cheap and doesn't require any technical knowledge. I can't wait until we move to our own place and I can have a craft area. Will have to be pretty big though to fit the 6+ boxes of crafty stuff I have in storage plus my sewing machine! I've made a deal with OH; he gets to set up his xbox/surround sound gaming area in the living room as long as I get the spare room or the rest of the lounge for my crafting :D
Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger No. 26 :hello:
    XStitch to do list:
    -- Birth Sampler -- Christmas Angel -- Mum's Xmas Stitch -- Christmas decs 3 & 4 -- Xmas Bird --
-- Snowflake Sonata -- Be Jolly -- JE Unicorn -- Start HAED!!! --
  • I play Trombone in a Ska Band :)

Life is sometimes a bit pants but occasionally you can wear your french knickers! :D

I do think about writing a novel as I have plenty of ideas but so far haven't had the motivation.

I play video games too which, yes, I know is stigamitised as being geeky, but I don't really care. RPGs and Hybrid-RPGs are great to lose yourself into for a few hours at a time and generally include various tasks and side-quests away from the main plot of the game, giving you versatility in how you play. And as much as I do like films, the best video games also have a story that involves you moreso than a film can because it's interactive and places you directly in the events occurring.

I do like other games too - the Total War series are fun but extremely time consuming and require some heavy PC hardware which I suppose brings me to what I might term fannying about with computers.

I've always enjoyed this. Except for the laptops, every PC I've owned since I was 14 I've built myself and it isn't hard to do. With some research, it is also a lot cheaper as you can build more powerful PCs for less money. There's a nice sense of accomplishment when you switch one on for the first time and set it all up. It's not something you can do on a daily basis of course but it gives you a side-hobby of keeping up with the latest technology.

Video editing is something I'd like to get into - custom music videos and the like.

You sound rather like me - writing, RPGs, building my own comp - even done a bit of vidding - I'm now teaching myself Blender so I can make scenery, characters etc for computer games and website animations.

But I also like tabletop games - Dungeons and Dragons etc, because it's nice getting together with a group of people occasionally (rather than in cyberspace).

Also, I love treasure hunting - which gives you fresh air and exercise too! I've done a little metal detectoring, lots of fossil hunting - even a little - ahem - urban exploring http://www.ukurbex.com/
