  • Hello All
I'm loving this thread, my mouth waters every time I think of it. I want to give some of these ideas a go, but I need to ask a question, but feel a bit silly asking it...can these slow cooker recipes be used in a casserole dish and cooked in the oven? If so, what temperature should I set the oven to? Guess if the temperature is correct then the timing is as per the recipe. Any other tips on how to improvise would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Over 30 and still can't cook, oh dear... :-[

Thanks everyone for all the recipes and ideas.

A word of warning if you have a husband like mine - he now comes home everyday - inspects the slow cooker hopefully and is most hangdog if there is not something nice in there that he can scoff immediately.

I cooked a large pot of soup overnight thinking that would do us all day (lunch and tea) then came downstairs to kitchen table to see him eating pea and ham soup for breakfast!

As fast as I can cook the stuff he eats it - does anyone remember an old fairy tale THE MAGIC COOKING POT - IT WAS NEVER EMPTY AND FILLED ITSELF! iF oNLY! ???

I buy a cheap joint of beef (brisket) from Morrisons for about £2.50 (this serves two of us for Sun lunch and enough for sarnies for two days).

Chop a couple of spuds, a carrot and onion and place these on the base of the crockpot and sit the joint on top.

Add a bit of made up stock (just enough to cover the vegetables not the meat) and pepper and cook it on slow for about 8 hours or so.

When it's finished take out the beef and wrap it in some foil to keep it warm, pour the stock and veg from the crockpot into a blender and blend to make gravy.

You will find that you will have to add a bit of water to the blender as the potatoes will thicken the gravy.

You can always add a bit of red wine too to make it extra special.

I always find that this makes so much gravy I have to freeze some of it.
  • I use mine for brisket too. A chopped onion and a couple of tbsp of good soy sauce - no other liquid - over the brisket makes gravy by the time the cooking's finished, and the meat has a good intense flavour. I turn it about half way through if I remember.

    great with mash ;D

I am testing out a dish today in the slow cooker, inspired by a Nigella Lawson one, except she did hers in the oven. I have put olive oil in the base to cover the bottom, put 3 largish spuds sliced layered on top with a large sliced onion and 2 chopped cloves of garlic, and put chicken breasts on the top coated with a little more olive oil, pepper, sea salt and oregano. I am not going to take the lid off all day - discipline required here, but i do have a glass lid so i can keep an eye on it! And it's on low. I know theres not much liquid but there should be just enough in the spuds and chicken to keep it tender.

I was just looking for a different slow cooker recipe. Thanks glad!

Do I really need to remove the chicken before thickening? (I'm really very lazy!)

Mmmm, all sound lovely, but now I've got too many decisions for Sunday lunch :-/

As a variation on your theme Ssaver could you make potatoes dalphinous (I can't spell :-[ hope you know what I mean)
replace the olive oil with some seasoned double cream with some garlic chopped up in it.
When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt ;)
