I bought a slow cooker for my sister when she split up with her husband. She is out to work all day and has a little boy so I thought it would be a good idea. I didnt think I needed one because I am at home all day and can use the oven. WRONG! I read the first page of this thread which said using the oven is more expensive, so now who is buying a slow cooker with her Amazon vouchers!

There are some great recipes here that I have never tried, and so cheap too!

Oooooooh, my present this year from blokey's family is a slow cooker, i am so excited! I've wanted one for ages but couldn't justify the expenxe as it's just for me - blokey is a fussy eater! I've ordered the 2-portion cooker from Lakeland, it's dinky and should suit me perfectly as otherwise i would overcook AND over-eat! :D
Thanks for all these gorgeous recipes, i shall spend a bit of time later organising them and printing them out :)
  • I so need to get me one of these slow cookers. Anyone have recommendations on makes or models?

Somewhere on one of the many pages of this thread this has been discussed (I think it was on about page 2 or 3 and 5 if you want to read the full discussion), in short the gerneral consensess (sp?) of opinion was; get THIS one. I did and I'm really happy with it. The only problem with it is that it is big and heavy. It does look nice on the counter top but it is really heavy to be lifting in and out of a cupboard - so not great if you are short on space :-/. There are only 2 of us and it makes loads to eat and some to freeze. I recently made enough chilli in it to feed 10!!!!! (served it with rice and baked potatoes, but even then..)
Morphy richards do make a smaller one (3.5l) but it is more expensive ???

Amazon don't seem to have the big one in stock (have we cleared out all there stock? ;D) but they were available in Asda.

The great thing about this one is it has a seperate crock pot so you can take it out to wash it so it's really easy to clean, it has the 3 settings so if you are going out to work all day you can set it on low or, if you don't get it ready until 1pm you can set it on high.

I've got this one, well, i will have on Christmas Day! :D
It looks perfect for those who eat smaller portions, or like me only cook "real" food for one :)
  • Thanks everyone,

I like the look of the small one at lakeland but the big morphy might be better, for when i do joints. Argos are out of stock at the mo but Tesco have it for £26.99, free delivery and club points. Might have to go for that.

The small one at lakeland says it costs less than a lightbulb to run. Would that be true of the 6.5 Morphy too?

a very kind mse-er donated a small slo cooker to me recently and I have made chicken casserole (chix thighs, carrts, onion, celery, stock). Sausage casserole with sausages (no, really?!), red peppers, onion, mushrooms and a colmans packet mix (cos its lurvely), I've also roasted a turkey drumstick (had to chop a bit off the leg to fit in it tho) and a shoulder of lamb fillet. they have been some of themost delicious meals I have made in a long time and solittle fuss or bother AND the crock is SO easy to clean afterwards!

thanks for all the recipes so far - I've collated a few that I like the sound of into a word document and might make some over this looming festive season. also thanks to glad for advice on howmuch liquid to use. less is definitely more!
