    i pressume you didnt brown the outside or anything first and just put it in raw?
    for a large piece of gammon i usually give it 12-15 hours so im thinking about the same for the crown

    I've noticed reading this thread that everyone seems to cook for differing lengths of time and some have different settings.  My slow cooker seems to cook really quickly but I'd say if 12-15 hours is what yours usually takes for gammon use that as your guide.

    I never pre-cook or brown anything..just throw it all in ;D

    Last weekend I bought a cheap turkey crown from Lidl, put it in the micro for 3 mins, then into the slow cooker, covered the meat with home made stuffing, and cooked on slow all day (about 9 hours). I didn't add any juice.

    When we were ready to eat, I steamed the veg, made the gravy from the juices out of the steamer, and sliced up the lovely turkey and stuffing.

    On Monday we all took turkey, stuffing and cranberry sandwiches to work/school, and on Monday night we had turkey curry!Mmmmmm

    i presume the 3 mins in the microwave first is to give it a bit of a head start?
    was the meat moist and tender?

    Can you make chutney in the slow cooker? I have a few tomato plants that have come to a standstilll, so a lot of green tomatoes! Ive got a recipe just wondered if any of u had done chutney in the slow cooker?

    Ssaver This recipe is essentially; bung everything in and simmer, I would assume that you could bung it in a slow cooker and just extend the time :-/.

    I like the look of this recipe so I'm going to have a go at making it (in the slow cooker). I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Hi All
    I'm hoping you can come through with some advice for me.
    I was given a big slow cooker last night (A big silver Morphy Rochards like the photo earlier in this thread. It has low/high/auto settings ) but I'm a slow cooker virgin & it doesn't have any instructions!!
    I think I get the gist of casseroling in it it (throw everything in with lots of stock/liquid & set on low for a long time??) but reading this thread I see I can also cook meat joints & other stuff in it? If I wanted to cook a chicken, for example, could I just throw a raw chicken in it, do I add liquid or what? I know I can cook cheaper meat in it but what cuts are best?
    If anyone can recommend a beginners book or offer any advice I'd really appreciate it!

    When I cook joints I put a little water in the bottom to make gravy with at the end. About 1/2pt with an onion, carrot and some mushrooms. Whizz the whole lot up at the end and thicken with cornstarch. I prefer to take my joint out of the slo-cooker and whack into a really hot oven to colour while I do the gravy.

    With a whole chicken I add a little water to the bottom to get the whole thing cooking but do not use it for gravy as it is too greasy. Don't bother browning the chicken after cos I can't get it out of the slo-cooker in one piece. Prod it with a fork and the meat will just fall off the bones. Use your slo-cooker to make stock using the bones, onion, carrot etc. One chicken carcass makes 12pts of stock in my slo-cooker.

    lillibet, i do the same as math, and i do the stock too, is wonderful for soups and things. let us lknow how you get on.
