Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou :T :T :T will be making a list of my faves tomorrow :D

Actually after looking at the site it's put me off a bit coz all the recipes I looked at were based on some sort of cooking sauce and I wanted to use my slow cooker for several reasons:
    - so I could chuck everything in and not think about it till teatime
    - getting into better cooking & eating habits rather than relying on takeaways :o
    - eating more cheaply
I think that uses cooking sauces aren't healthy or cheap so it doesn't really suit me after all :(

After trawling through Google I'm off to look through the MSE slow-cooking index coz there's nothing else out there that isn't American

Hi everyone, i have purchased my first ever slow cooker recently and have a quick question.

I have a very good book for One Pot cooking but the recipes are for cooking in the oven or in a saucepan on the hob. If a recipe says to cook for two hours in the oven/on the hob how long should this be adapted to for cooking in the slow cooker?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  • I have made a sausage casserole in my slow cooker today and just had it for my dinner - was very yummy!! but i have some left - how should i heat it up for tomorrow!? Should I put it back in the slow cooker?

I always reheat my sausage casserole on the hob or in the micro, it takes too long in the slow cooker to reheat thoroughly. Try cutting your sausages in half to speed up the reheat. It also freezes well so I always make a triple batch and freeze lots.

I picked up 4 poussin reduced at sainbury today. I was thinking of stuffing a lemon and some herbs in them bunging them in the slow cooker on a bed of spinach or something to that effect.

    What do you reckon?

Anything else I should add - stock or win maybe

How long do you think they will need?

Hi all, I have a 6.5l slow cooker that has been sitting in the kitchen for 4-5 weeks now doing nothing. I suddenly feel inspired to make a cheap meal as Lidls have advertised their 70% off fruit & veg from Thursday.
I particularly enjoy chicken, beef and mince and would like a few suggestions in the casserole department, spag bol and chilli dishes where I can't fail to go wrong. I really need to impress the OH with my cullinary skills and to achieve this I cant afford any mishaps. Only requisite is that they must be delicious and simple. Thanks in advance

i have a 6.5 slow cooker as well and i do hugeeee batches of spag bol in it. i used to buy the cheapest/smallest tray of mince i could find but now i find its just as economical to buy a large tray of decent mince and batch cook and freeze...it saves my washing up and my time!
fry it off in the frying pan and drain all the fat off of it then chuck it all in slowcooker with 3 chopped onions, 3 or 4 tins of cheapo chopped tomatoes, a squirt of garlic(i cheat cos i cant stand smelling the stuff on my hands :o )a squirt of tomato puree, a grated carrot, 3 or 4 crumbled oxo cubes, maybe a chopped red pepper if i have 1 lurking, a good dash of mixed herbs and to give it a really lovely flavour a good swig of balsamic vinegar (this really makes it taste nice!) turn the slow cooker on to low in the morning and by tea time you have a really delish meal waiting for you and the meat is really tender. as theres only 3 of us there is normally loads left to freeze into meal sized portions and also enough left over to turn it into a nice chilli the next day by adding chilli pepper and kidney beans to it or lasagne by layering it with lasagne sheets and a white sauce topped with cheese bung it in the oven for half an hour and jobs a good un :j
hope you have many happy years with your slow cooker i love mine now and dont know what i did before i had it! :D
