Mary_Boland wrote:I've just bought a slow cooker after reading all the threads on here. Is it possible to overcook meat in the slow cooker. Think I have just ruined a large piece of ham by leaving it in too long. It seems to be quite dry even though I cooked it in apple juice. Any advice please.
I managed to overcook a chicken casserole last week. The meat was all dry and tasted burnt. I had left it overnight on low. Obviously did not need that long.
I do cook ham overnight. I put it on around 10pm. I just cover it in water. By 7am its done.0 -
I had my old trusty slow cooker for over ten years, but dropped the pot lid which smashed to smitherines... Got a new one as a present - a beautiful Paul Rankin one with a glass lid.
Maybe it's the glass lid and i can see it bubbling away, but i've become obsessed with the small plume of steam escaping..... the lid doen't seem to fit as well as the old hefty pot one - i know it's not supposed to 'fit', but this one has a tiny wobble that i'm sure it shouldn't have.... i can't remember whether my old friend 'steamed' like this.
Help please?
Do the old trusty kind do this?
Has anyone else got one of this variety and can reassure me?0 -
Hi
Was your old SC the one with the brown pot? If so I had one the same and broke the lid but was able to get a replacement lid from the market and was then as good as new.:j
Just a thought for you.0 -

Need some help with SC -
I have a sc 6.5l cap
last night i added all ingredients for Morcaccan Lamb
switched cooker on Low setting and of to bed approx 12.30am
Up this morning to a burnt offering. all the ingredients were correct as i double checked.
Q - should i be adding liquid to the capacity of the cooker or just as normal recipes state??? ( having senior moments:rotfl: )
I did think that maybe as it was a good few years old that maybe thier was a problem with it so went to Argos today and bought a small capacity one 3 ltr more suitable ( £13.32 40% off) but want to make sure that i don't make the same mistake again!!! as instruction booklet doesn't appear to say anything about liquid content.
Any advice greatfully recieved£2 Pig has £86 in his Tummy. I am seriuosly Become a O/S Saver0 -
Hey everyone - I am very new to this site but it is proving to be very interesting! I am a University student and I have got myself a slow cooker!! Since my grandmother died - my grandfather hasn't cooked much and said I could have it.
All of my house mates love it - when they walk in the front door and I am making stew/soup!! At the moment I have got a gammon joint in - I intend to have it in salads throughout the week!
A recipe for you: Butternut Squash Soup
1pt Veg Stock
1 Butternut Squash (peeled and chopped into cubes)
2 Carrots (peeled and chopped)
1 Onion (peeled and Chopped)
Throw it all in - I normally put it on high and it take about 2 - 2.5 hours, just keep checking until all the veg is soft - then that is your minimum time. Could really leave it in as long as you like!!
Then just blend it....soo yummy!
Another really nice soup is - Sweet potato and tomato
1 onion
2 cloves of garlc (optional)
2/3 large sweet potatoes (peeled and chopped)
2 tins of tomatoes
in all honesty i have yet to try this one in the slow cooker so thought one of you may like to - you may want to add another tin of tomatoes as I found that 2 was not quite enough!
Hope this helps!
Will be trying all your recipes in the coming weeks - I like the look of the cramy rice pudding!0 -

Stange to be discussing slow cooker recipes on a hot day like today, but having said that I cooked phesant in red wine in mine yesterday. No slaving over a hot stove on a hot day for me.0 -
I recently took the plunge and bought a 6.5l slow cooker. I have tried a few casseroles and such in it but the only thing I been really enjoyed that I have made in it is a chicken curry.
I would be grateful if some of the experienced slow cooker chefs out there would suggest their all time slow cooker successes with me.
So far when I have preapred things such as chicken casserole I have brown the meat and onions first. I have found the meat a bit on the dry and chewy side.Twins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0
