    There was a bit of venting on there and one client was mentioned by their full name and another by their first name.

    What is it with facebook and work these days?, I have my professional life and my personal life and they are separate, Linkedin for the former and facebook for the latter.

    Good luck for the meeting, personally I would fire you for mentioning clients in the facebook posts. I have some challenging customers, but my team need them so they can pay their mortgages, and I would come down on them like a ton of bricks if I ever heard them slagging off a client.
  • But why would you hear them slagging a client off? This was a PRIVATE GROUP! Are you honestly saying

    a) that you don't ever talk about clients with your colleagues, including 'slagging them off', and you don't ever vent to your peers

    b) that you wouldn't ever do this over an online method if you weren't office based?

    I'm not saying that what the OP did was right, by the way, just that I consider it defensible.

    OP has less than a year's service. The employer doesn't need grounds to dismiss.

    Sorry, that should say TWO years' service as OP started working for the company after April 2012.

    It doesn't make any difference to OP's situation, but I don't want to give misleading info for anyone else reading the thread. I have corrected my post above.

    Still trying to understand why anyone would set up a private group on facebook, did you not think somone high up would find out about it and not be happy about it. Facebook is hardly an easy was to communicate with fellow colleagues when out in the field, an easier way is call or text is it not.

    Try groveling but dont hold out much hope.

    Was it you who mentioned the clients names? Did you respond in the slagging off?

    I hope you printed off the offending conversation before you deleted the group if you did NOT partake in the slagging off.

    Nothing is truly private on the internet as the OP has discovered.

    a) I never slag my clients off during work, if a client is challenging we discuss strategies on how we can work with them better, the only time I would moan is to my wife but that would be moans about the SMGT rather than a client.

    b) My last role was based at home and my team of 25 staff all working from home, we never used an online method to slag off clients

    To me there is no defence for the OPs actions Ultimately I understand my clients are the reason why my dept exists, my staff understand that their mortgages are paid and their kids are fed, and to be frank the challenging clients are some of my very best clients.

    A recent example was a client who decided that they wanted the scope of a project changing entirely after 8 months of work, whilst that caused a few raised eye brows amongst the team, it also led to an additional 400k worth of work. Which means by year end we will have smashed our annual targets, which will result in a tasty bonus for all involved.

    Which all means, happy clients, happy staff, happy senior management team and increased head count allowance for next year.

    Should I risk all of that for the sake for venting on Facebook? I have a responsibility to my staff and myself not to risk our futures on nonsense.
  • OP you stated that you created the group, were posts also being made to personal profiles during works time?

    Your disciplinary may be the first of many, if I was one of the members of the said group I would be looking to make my profile private ASAP.

    Could be that the OP's group wasn't quite as private as they thought. Read an article in the NY Times a few weeks ago about some gay students that were accidentally outed to their families as a result of privacy settings on Facebook groups not working as expected.     Moral of the story is that you should never put anything onto social media that you aren't happy about everyone knowing about - once it's out there, it's out of your control.

    Its been covered on here at least once (from what i can remember) and it was in the news a few years ago where the employee posted comments on facebook about work and got fired.

    If your going to moan about work stuff do it with people who you dont work with or just keep opinions to yourself.
