Very surprised to find out no duvets for babies! when Did that happen?
My 3 all had duvets ! How do you keep them warm now then? Surely not sheets and blankets -they will get tangled up!

I obviously need to read up on how to do babies!

Thanks so much for the walk through of strawb planting :) it's going to be so useful in getting this right. I think hanging baskets are the way to go, hung on the fence, and very cheap to source.

Welcome hippymam, especially from one mam to another.

Must be at least 8 year old the idea of no duvets for babies. Definitely a no-no with my eldest. The idea being that 1) far too hot for babies but mainly 2) is that babies can wriggle underneath them, thinking prevention of cot death lines. We had sleeping bags for ours, they hooked over their shoulders and zipped up the sides but were very thin in comparison to duvets.

:) Hello and welcome, Hippymam and welcome back, Sunshine4. And belated Happy Birthday to Softstuff and hoping you soon feel better. Can see why that litany of woes would grind anybody down, though.

Looking forward to hitting the lottie tomorrow, probably with a pal, depending on how she feels. Fingers crossed for fine weather. Last Saturday I accidentally dug up the darlingest little toad, only about 1.5 inches long, in the veg patch. I cupped the little sweetie in my gloved hands and hid it under the chards, as I'm not working that area for a while. Hope it dug itself in there and will keep out of harm's way.

My lottie site heaves with frogs, toads, common newts and there are allegedly Great Crested Newts too, allotment officer told me. I've never seen the G.C. Newts, only the little common ones. Once found a perfectly-preserved one frozen in mid-stride underground, which freaked me out just a tiny bit.

:( Quiet at the moment but we've just had an attempted murder. Quite a few of the neighbours were able to give good witness statements, so the Polis told SuperGran. And in broad bliddy daylight, too. Dunno what it's like in Lunnon Town but this dozy little burg gets hairier by the year...........

Right, time for more tea. Nursie still hasn't made it back home so will have to pop the kettle on myself. It's a nuisance but I am enjoying the peace and quiet; please don't hurry her home unless she's a major PITA...........:rotfl:

Mine had duvets, thin ones at around 4 togs and the advice back then was to sleep them half way down the cot with the dvet tucked under the mattress so they couldn't wriggle down. My friend just made the cot as normal and shoved a coulee of yellow pages at the end so her baby couldn't wriggle down. It's all common sense really. My midwife couldn't believe I brought my first born home to a flat with no heating at the end of November with snow on the ground. I pointed out that central heating had been around far less than babies and she shut up.

Fuddle - last year my local 99p store had hanging hessian bags suitable for strawbs and tumbling toms. 2 in a pack if I recall and they were fab. I had them on hooks on a fence post.

Stay safe GQ, scary stuff x

    Waves to Hippymam Welcome

Elisamoose That's you and me both re babies...DD keeps saying stuff to me and I'm say 'OH have they changed that then?' The midwife who paid DD her home visit, told her that because she has food allergies herself, she shouldn't eat peanuts, in case she gave baby a nut allergy. DD practically lives off Peanut butter as it's one of the few things she can eat on toast :( I had a poke about online, and it seems to be a rather dubious grey area???

Also on the same subject...Ikea were selling cot duvet and duvet covers...I know cos' DD bought one. So I guess they are a super low tog? Really it's surprising that any of us survived :D as there are so many things that you 'shouldn't' do anymore.

Apart from that. It's DS's 21st today. He liked his pressies and has gone out with his mates tonight. He's ordered a tray of chocolate brownies, and asked if he could have steak as his birthday treat, but not tonight. We agreed to do it Sunday, as I'm working tomorrow.

DD and I went shopping for food for the event I am catering tomorrow. Vegan food for an unknown number (but hopefully about 24) I'm making a bean stew which I can streeeetch a bit if need be, or freeze/sell leftover to the punters. It's an event one of the other traders (one of the arty farty ones) in the market has organised, a foreign film night, with live music. It's a French film so it's a Mediterranean bean stew with toms, aubergines and courgettes, and I'm making olive bread to go with it. DD will be assisting. It's hopefully and ongoing thing, with films and food to match. Probably will only get my expenses paid this time, but should be fun, and a chance to hand out some business cards to a new set of people. Always game for an opportunity! (and a night out even if it means working!)

Babies' rules change from month to month don't they. I know that in the space of 4 years the recommendations from eldest to youngest had changed. There has been a reduction if sudden infant death of late though so really I would back the no duvet baby advice wholeheartedly. My two also slept feet to foot of the cot. I didn't listen to all the advice with my two and honestly I think if I did I would have two very soft, fussy, clinically clean girls!

Do though, where new babies are concerned, read up on SIDS. :)
  • Popped on to send huge hugs to Unixgirl, Katie and to 2t, i'm glad your shoulder seems to be on the mend now.

Fuddle, B and Q generally do cheap buckets (used to be 99p), just drill a few holes in the bottom for your strawbs, you can then leave them on the ground or tie string/wire through the handle and hang them up on brackets or around fence posts.

Stiltwalker, you carry on with that degree, better to have it and maybe not use it than regret not finishing it in 10 years time.

I had a really crap start to the week, had a flu like virus so had to phone in sick so have lost 7 days work. Then I sat and stressed about how I was gonna pay the bills this month without a full months wages. Thankfully a friend who owed me some money paid up this week so crisis averted. :o
