Softstuff, I'm very low maintenance (notice the lack of make up tips beause I never wear any) but the facial hair? Nope, not going to let that sit there.

I recall a woman of 30 ranting humourously about The Things No One Tells You About Having a Baby. Her chief rant was the chin hairs she'd acquired with pregnancy which seemed intent on hanging around forever after. It's possibly the last taboo.

Mind you, I saw an old boy last year with a clump of hairs along the middle of his nose, not a monobrow, just a random outpost of hairness. There's always some burger worse off than you....

I'm a make-up, nail varnish, hair dye and hair product free zone. But do not try and pry my razor and tweezers from me!

Up until my late teens I had a monobrow. It was, over the course of a few years, waxed, threaded and tweezed to all hell. It was only a few years ago that I realised I no longer had to tweeze it much. Though it turns out that the hairs that used to be there have migrated to my upper lip and chin :rotfl:

MrsLW, I'm glad the talk of facial hair helps you feel better about yours. It's so normal and yet as GQ says, the final taboo.

Fortunately I married a furry man too (I sometimes call him Sasquatch as a cute name, since he's a furry beast). I poke fun at his ever growing nose hair and long eyebrows (I trim those for him) and he doesn't bat an eyelid at my bathroom defuzzing. He hasn't got ear hair yet, but when he does I guess I'll be trimming that too.

Regarding facial hair, I bought one of these when I saw it had great reviews on the Grabbit board http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004LNXA0Y/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
and have been very pleased with it, bought one for my sister too. It's a bit painful on the upper lip at first, since it's pulling all the hairs out which you just don't really do with tweezers, but it gets easier. You may be able to get them even cheaper on the bay.
  • Morning folks, once again I haven't been posting much mostly because not much has been going on (which is a good thing in many respects).

Thanks for sharing all the stories about errant hairs: I haven't even got any children, but that doesn't stop me peering into the bathroom mirror with tweezers at the ready! The biggest problem is that the hairs are now turning white - which makes them harder to spot against my pasty white skin:eek:

Before I forget - good luck with the interview Unixgirl: keep us posted.

Softstuff - I need to pick your culinary brains. You're pretty good at interpreting/cooking Japanese style food: have you got a foolproof recipe for okonomiyaki (the cabbage pancake things)? I want to try making then tomorrow - but there are so many different recipes out there! Husband has never recovered from the swede fritters I once made (don't ask - they were as bad as they sound!) so I'd like to use a tried and tested recipe.

Fuddle - I can vouch for the various BB creams: I've had free samples of several different makes, including garn!er and r!mmel and they are excellent. Unlike foundation, they also don't seem to need any skill to apply them - which is a bonus in my case!

Have a good day all, stay wrapped up warm.

7 week wonder, as softstuff may be asleep now, I use this recipe http://lasvegasfoodadventures.wordpress.com/2011/02/18/okonomiyaki/
although I don't put mayo on top, where I lived only bulldog sauce was used on okonomiyaki. Slightly runny HP sauce is fine as a sub for tonkatsu sauce. I'd always use shredded cabbage and spring onions, but anything else is interchangeable, it's just meant to use up ingredients you've got.

PS forgot to say, good luck with the interview Unixgirl, fingers crossed!
  • Brilliant! Thanks Possession - I'd forgotten you'd lived in Japan. Quick question - I always get confused with cup measurements: any idea how the flour and stock measurements translate into weights and volumes?

Funny enough, I recently made my own Okonomi sauce (see my homepage for details), but still haven't actually made Okonomiyaki. I have also read rather a number of recipes and been slowly collecting the ingredients! I have the dashi powder, the tenkasu (though I since heard you can substitute rice crispies for this), the pickled ginger, the homemade okonomi sauce, homemade japanese mayo, katsuobushi and aonori, but I still haven't got the nagaimo. And apparently the nagaimo is crucial to the texture. With any luck though this weekend I should hit the nearby town where there's an Asian grocery store, so should be trying it next week.

This is the recipe I'll be using:
    http://justonecookbook.com/blog/recipes/okonomiyaki/

I'm very confident in the recipes on the site, I've adapted many of them for my own use and have found them all to be very good.

Now, if you wanted to adapt somewhat, you can switch dashi powder for a stock cube, tenkasu for rice crispies, make your own mayo and okonomi sauce, ignore the katsuobushi and crumble a sheet of toasted nori up for the aonori. I don't think there's a good sub for nagaimo though, but I believe there's a powdered version available.

I hope that was some help, but feel free to ask anything about that kind of thing, it's been somewhat of a hobby :o.

Edited to add: Hehe, beat me to it Possession. I notice no nagaimo in that recipe, so I might have to give it a go.

:)Morning all! We have the yellow ball as well and a clear blue sky. It shows up all the bits that I need to clean now:( I made a feeble attempt at cleaning part of the UPVC in the conservatory but am going to have to wait until my back gets stronger. I am getting there now though -hopefully.

My hair started to go white in my mid 30s I take after my dear late Mum who was the same. At first I was a bit freaked out by it and tried to dye it out. Then I reached a point about 4/5 years ago when I just thought, oh to hell with it, I'll go with the flow. I am completely white now, but am quite happy with it. DH says it suits me and my hairdresser has even dyed hers a similar colour -so I was quite flattered:) I will probably not change it now, as it would feel a bit weird. What I am dreading is possibly getting a wide parting or thinned out patches. My hair is so fine, I'm always peering into the mirror to see if I can spot any baldy bits:eek: I told my hairdresser if it ever happens I want extensions or a wig:D

I went almost white in front but stayed black at the back. Couldn't dye it dark as I had roots showing within a week. Couldn't go nondescript dark blonde/light brown because of the black. So I went au naturel and the contrast was quite dramatic. Have thought about dying it on occasion in the last year or so as there is a lot less black than there was but the DM always manages to publish a horror story about the dangers of hair dye just before I do anything
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

TBH there are a 1000 different recipes for okonomiyaki in Japan too, if you go to a different bar it will taste different. It's very much our equivalent of bubble and squeak, ie. you throw everything in you've got hanging around in the bottom of the fridge. DH loves this kind of thing (his mum used to make him pancakes for breakfast every day!!!) but the children don't like all the cabbage etc so we haven't had it for ages.

Maryb I'm the same, I was just about to buy a box dye a few weeks ago when there were pics on Yahoo of some poor woman whose face had swollen to twice it's normal size. I used to have it coloured by my hairdresser (who comes to my house) but am seeing what it's like now without.
  • I just have to share this, we were driving home from Lidl this morning down a fairly major but rural road and stopped at a pelican crossing as a lady with a pushbike had pressed the button. As we were sitting there He Who Knows said 'Would you look at that?' and dashing up the grass verge was a squirrel, it ran like a mad thing to the crossing, looked up and dashed across in safety just as the lights started to change!!!! No question about it, it knew to cross where the crossing was as it came quite a way up the verge to get there, I can only guess that it has learned that the beeping sound means it is going to stop the traffic, quite amazing!!!!!

For anyone interested, Lidl still have 5 kilo sacks of onions for £1.99p, certainly the best price I can find, Cheers Lyn xxx.
