What did our elders do with their face skin in the terrible winters? Did they just put up with it? My face is a mess. I guess it's walking in the icy winds and central heating. I just don't know what to do with it.
The thing about being horribly short sighted is that the glasses go some way to hide the wrinkles round the eyes
Thirsk, never been but not a kick in the backside off when I reside elsewhere.... Ergh at being broken downing the A19. It's bad enough being in it when you're moving!I find my own extreme shortsightedness occasionally quite handy. Like the time a few years back when I was at the dentist having a lower wisdom tooth pulled with only injections and my (then) bonkers South African dentist left the room and came back with an implement which looked exactly like a pair of pullers from my tool kit at home! I laughed and said that I'd take my glasses off there and then so I couldn't see anything else alarming. It was no biggy but I apparently have 3 roots on my wisdoms (some people even have 4!), not the more normal 2, so am officially ODD.
The alternator went in Yorkshire and we rolled to a halt a few miles shy of Thirsk. And the first car which stopped was an unmarked Police car. Things like that happen to me all the time, I'd make a lousy criminal.........:rotfl:MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »GQ - Have had a revellation this weekend, I have also been sleeping badly and my lovely DD got me a pair of Bedsocks!!! She also made me a hot water bottle and as a result of the extra snuggliness these engendered I slept for 8 hours solidly, which as been repeated for the next four nights, so I am convinced it works. Worth a try in this cold weather? Cheers Lyn xxx. Those are good tips and I've used them successfully in other colder homes but my flat is like a little oven and I'm often half out of the duvet due to being tooo warm. Got a bit of stress at the mo, eczema has flared and a few other bits, can be bit of a stress bunny at times. All will pass; I'm better when I can spend more time out of doors.
morning all. I had a very unsettled night due to eldest daughters hamster making a racket most of the night and then escaping from its cage! I woke up to a rusling sound and thought the cat was trying to see the hamster and it was hamster running around my bookcase! Luckily i was able to catch the bleeping thing and deposit it back in the cage but the cage is missing a clip holding top to base. hopefully i can get a replacement clip in petsathome today cos i really dont fancy that again.
On the plus side i had the pleasure of listening to my youngest belting out the 12 days of christmas whilst in the bathroom:rotfl:.This reminds me of when we were kids and had an albino hamster. One morning we came down and *horrors* the cage door was open and the critter was loose in a room with a very excited cat. We managed to evict the cat and catch the hamster, which was damp (obviously been in the cat's mouth at some point) and had then got in the coal scuttle.........!
OMG, trying to bathe a wriggling hamster with warm water and cotton wool, we managed to get it down to piebald grey-and-white but it was absolutely ages before Snowy reverted to the pristine whiteness which earned him his name.:rotfl:
It's dry outside but well below freezing so I shall be well wrapped when I toddle up the road to the t'office. Ohh, poor neighbour's car is coughing like a dying cow, not a good sound on a frosty morning.
Reminds me of when I was in the car part factor trade; the first frosty mornings of autumn saw the phones ringing off the hook as dodgy batteries karked it. Good idea to replace an ailing battery before autumn if you can, before it lets you down.
Hokay, more tea and then some more tea, I think. Gotta get my priotities right.;)Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Morning all,
Mar I hope you had a peaceful night and things start to improve with your son. Hope you aren't too frosty up the hill - it's bad enough deep in the 'Burbs of Edinburgh.
Thanks KatieOwl and Kidcat for your suggestions about silicone baking sheets. KatieOwl - I feel it's only fair to tell you that I regard you as my guru for all things baking! I should have known - in the programme they used silicone, but the recipe said greaseproof paper was fine. I'm going to do the fairy cakes tonight and then try out a biscotti recipe. Hopefully I will be in a better frame of mind than last night. I knew things were bad when I had two things to do before going to bed: put the porridge oats in to soak, and top up the cat's bowl of crunch. Yes I very solemnly weighed out cat crunch into a saucepan but thankfully spotted my mistake before adding milk!
Have a good/gentle/calm day all.0 -
Morning all,
I was cosy in bed even though the house was/is cold. I was going to watch some tv but slept the night away instead. Content and reasonably happy/positive but the nice night at the music club McCulloch has introduced me to and a Carling Gold drink probably help too:rotfl:never been a drinker much but I do like this. One's enough:p
I made some ham and pease pudding buns when I came home too.
By it was cold last night just doing a small walk from the bus stop to the music club was so icy. I caught a bus from the carol service that brought me as close to the club as possible. I had dressed for the service but never managed to take my coat off as the church was cold anyhow, so as I walked to the club I had on thermals, a woollen hat, two scarfs, gloves, thick socks, shirt and thick jumper and could still feel the cold.
Round here and many places they use that black tar like stuff on footpaths now and tbh when there is frost it is worse at hiding ice(as often it cannot be seen)and where paths seem not to get icy if near a hedge because so many have been ripped out you cannot safely walk near the hedges anymore.
I agree with Meme about the cost of a Christmas meal. I still cannot free my turkey out of the freezer so next year I will have to clear the whole fridge/freezer and start from scratch so what a good job I have a store of food that does not need freezing(soups, tinned items etc...)
Anyhow, as has been said I think I can get a few days out of what I have anyhow...but I reckon each of my meals over the festive season and I will do all the vegetables(whether fresh or frozen)roast potatoes that you can imagine, meat, gravy and cranberry.
Probably followed by a little bit of Christmas pud(may cheat by using slices)and I reckon I can bring all that in for around/under £2 certainly no more than £3 and if I get a few meals over the week that cost will come down even further.
As I can't get at my frozen Turkey joint I may cheat again by using sliced turkey or use an alternative meat from the freezer from my yellow stickered selection. TBH having a cold concrete floor passage down the side of the house I probably could store some items quite safely without worrying about them thawing out."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Will probably buy a christmas cake too...I can buy a value one either in Tesco's or Aldi's probably be good enough for me as a single person for around the £3 mark. I don't tend to eat icing and marzipan so will look for a plain one."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Morning everyone, nice to see some of you posting again. I have missed your postings.
Today i am taking my mum to put wreathes on our grandparents graves, we will then have a cuppa on the way back at the transport cafe!! We live the high life lol. Going to also drop the christmas cards off to my uncles house, hopefully there will be no one else there. My mum can only cope with some of the family since my dad died, as at the wake they were asking if he had left much money etc... He had left her comfortably well off but thats not the point - it should never have been asked or even mentioned ever. My dad never let my mum or us go without, admitably we didnt have the most things we always had food and warm cosy home. some people.....
Oh has been eating the cold tea loaf, infact hes eaten about a half. The lemon cake is rather tangy, i put the juice and rind from 3 lemons in it. Maybe thats a little too much lol.
The fog is clearing at last, it was freezing fog yesterday evening. I hope it doesnt return again later on.BSC member 137

Perhaps someone techy here can help me understand this. If the machine can recognise the childrens' print how does it do that without a reference copy?0

No one can decide if it is a joke or real but there is a sign up in the new Broadcasting House at the BBC from Health and Safety and it says that you can only have 2-3 cups of tea or coffee per shift. And no more than two sachets of sugar in case you get too excited:rotfl:and that has been posted by a Radio 4 continuity announcer."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. I think from what my daughter school wrote on there fingerprint thingy it only recognises part of the actual finger print. It is auto matically removed the day they leave school to go onto collage or 6th form. She is at the post 16 centre and has to visit the main school each week for english lessons, this causes major problems as she has no finger prints stored at the main school now so cant gain access. It was initally used to help make the kids that got free school meals, so noone needed to actually know they got them.

My DD's school has a thumb print scanner. She had an initial scan taken which, I guess, must be stored in the system and uses that for library and canteen. But it is only one thumb. I must admit i thought it was utterly sensible as I can load money onto it from here or any computer. Probably even my phone. It uses the "parent pay" system and I can pay for school trips, music tuition etc through it. I can also see what she's been buying for lunch
("oh I see you had a tray bake, you had one of those yesterday too!" drives her nuts :rotfl: - in fairness I don't usually check)
Working at home today and trying to do so without the heating. So I am sat with 2 tops and a fleece with a fleecey blanket over my knees. If it gets too cold I will relent but we will see how we go. i may light a candle nearby to take the chill off. Porridge for breakfast and soup for lunch will help.
Groan - marking is boring, but I'd better get on with it.I wanna be in the room where it happens0
