heavenleigh - you can buy special oven guard strips that sit on the edges of the oven shelves, aldi often sell them and am sure amazon do too. stops you catching your arm as you reach in.
for the burn itself its a case of putting some kind of cream on it and maybe taking some pain relief too.

Have had the final part of DS14 assessment today, its the one where I have to sit in a room for 90mins a week discussing Ds, questions like when he was 6months old and was having a bath, did he make eye contact? what age did he understand personal modesty. It has been exhausting for four weeks - and to be honest am not sure I wasnt making half the stuff up, does anyone really remember these things. Its a worry that I may mess up his diagnosis by giving the wrong answer.
  • I need some support, burnt a 3" line on my arm yesterday removing the beef from the oven, then thought a hot bubble bath sounded great tonight with scented shampoo and body wash.... would really like everyone to remind me i'm an idiot for doing it, as to possibly deter me from doing it again! Hurts like hell and i know it's going to scar for a few months! Previous experience.... yes i am stupid enough to do it regularly!

Ouch! You poor thing! But I know what you mean about thinking a bath sounds like a good idea. Not sure if I have any practical suggestions except maybe next time try and remember to substitute a hot chocolate or something similar in place of the bath!

Sunshine - I am so sorry to hear about your brother. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Can I have some advice please. I made some Christmas spiced flapjack-y stuff yesterday. The flavours were great (cinnamon and cranberries) but it was a bit brittle. I think I prefer my flapjack more chewy. The binding ingredients were honey, butter and muscovado sugar. Any hints how to get it chewier? Would cooking at a lower temperature work?

Hope everyone's Monday wasn't too bad.

    Take care all.

PS And I'm another one who has decided in the interests of my, and everyone else's sanity, that I am going to pretend the thanks button doesn't exist: so please don't anyone take offence)

heavenleigh when my dad had a bad burn the hospital covered it in cream, a dressing and then bagged it off, and I seem to remember DD6 had similar when she burnt hers two years ago. May be worth a quick call to NHS direct to ask latest best practise.

Ah, the trials and tribulations of social networking sites!

It can be so easy to spend several hours a day at a computer, instead of getting on with real life responsibilities. At some point though we have to draw a line and set a limit on how much of the day we spend in our virtual worlds. After all, the bills have to be paid, the dinner has to be cooked, the kids have to be fed and the dog needs a walk. I try and restrict my posting time to an hour or so a day, and some days I don't post at all, when my real life is too busy.
As far as the thanks button business is concerned, I tend to use this button if someone has addressed me personally in a post, as a way of acknowledging their comment. Or if someone posts something that I think is absolutely brilliant. Can't see much point in using it in any other way, because then the thanks become meaningless and if you should miss thanking a post you can easily upset someone.

Social networking sites in general can be a very useful way of connecting to other human beings for people who are confined to quarters due to illness or disability. Also for people who, for one reason or another, do not get to go out very often and mix with other human beings. The usual caveats apply, though....such as, don't give away anything that can identify you or your location, and be careful how you say something because without the face to face contact it can so easily be misinterpreted.

Despite all this, I think the MSE site is a wondrous thing. It has helped me and my family enormously, and threads like this one show what a motley crew the human race is - but what a lovely bunch of people there are out there as well! Long may it continue!

  • The burn settled down a couple of hours after i did it, then stupidly whilst ironing the kids school clothes this morning started to itch....i was still half asleep so scratched it and took the top couple of layers of skin off leaving an open wound that obviously doesn't like scented bath products!
I'm fine it will heal in time, just wish i could get it into my thick head to be more careful with the oven!
A household of 6 makes dinner time busy but no excuse for burning myself weekly, thank you all for your comments xx

Don't give yourself a hard time, heavenleigh - ovens and irons tend to lie in wait and attack me, too! I just run cold water over the burnt limb/digit till it eases then massage lavender oil into it. Of course, a burn of a significant size needs medical attention. In that case do the cold water thing as described, then blot dry carefully then wrap in clingfilm for the journey to the hospital/medical centre. Cling film keeps it clean, protects it and doesn't stick to the wound like gauze or cloth.

Poor Stiltwalker, the vomiting bug has been in our house this weekend but I only have one little person to look after. I did have to take him to A&E to be checked over though on the instructions of NHS direct as he vomited so frequently. They were lovely....so kind and so helpful. I'm happy to say he hasn't beaten last years record of having the bug for three days. His mouth has gone back into hyperdrive so although he isn't eating and is only asking for "cups of tea" I assume he's on the mend.

Sunshine I'm sorry to hear about your brother.

The rest of you...I'm sorry but I use the thanks button as bookmark too, and thank most of what I read. If I miss people out it's either misdirection or I think the post may cause trouble. I do like a peaceful life. Sorry if I've missed anything important out. Due to having no sleep last night, my already bad memory is even worse tonight.
  • I thank people who i think have given an informative post (whether to me or someone else makes no difference) and to be honest don't care who thanks me but don't want anyone to feel left out who does care about it xx

I've never thought of the thanks button as it has in the last day or so.

    Ouch Heavenleigh,

I have two scars on my left hand from doing something similar years ago and they have remained.

On the other hand I managed to spill boiling hot water over my leg, virtually a kettle full not long before Mum passed away and no scars to be seen.

I hope that it improves and does not give you too much discomfort. Its always those unforseen accidents.

I've certainly been more careful since. But now that I mainly use other kitchen gadgets than the main oven it is even less likely to happen in the future. But I won't say never as that is tempting fate.
