Good advice - definately tell them (not ask - tell) to tip in more - both for board and towards one offs like annual payments. When I moved back home at 24 (after a particularly nasty breakup and in a bit of a pickle) 10 years ago I paid £50 a week and would have paid more but my parents were both in good jobs and they wanted me to have a bit of money to treat myself after a hard few years of utter skintness and problems. I also did all cooking and shopping on my days off (different to theirs) and my share of all cleaning, laundry and ironing. Even these days when we go up to stay for the weekend I will offer to help although I am not often allowed to as they like to give me a break and a chance for a bit of rest. (DH and I have 2 disabled kids so pretty full on usually). They do help us out a fair bit financially now for equipment that the kids need (but would have to wait 6 months for from funding/NHS or funding doesn't etirely cover etc) and will come down to have the kids for the day if I have a course or workshop - my dad is going to come to the Kidz up North with me tomorrow to help with all the lifting and pushing and in case one or other of the little monkeys gets cranky and needs a carry. They are fantastic!

Well, be proud of me - I now have a very clean and shiny bathroom!! Yay - I am slowly working my way through the house on a Wednesday when both kids are at nursery as I am ashamed to say the poor place has not had much more than a lick and a spit in quite some time with the kids needing me as much as they do and then being too tired and lazy to do it when they've gone to bed. All the major rooms have now had a thorough strip down and sort and I can now just do a proper clean throughout once a week on a Wednesday morning and have the rest of the day for 'me time'.

Car is back from garage and although the lights were more than we could have done with the bill actually came out about £50 less than I thought it would so was very impressed - and it was a nice little local independent garage so I can feel good for supporting local business.

If the adult sons won't give more money despite being asked I'd a)be very very miffed and b) tell them you couldn't afford the accidental damage cover (even if this is a little white lie) and if any of their stuff is accidentally damaged it won't be covered. I would also add up all your family spending over the next month (excluding specific xmas spending) to find out exactly what it does cost, with a view to putting up their monthly contribution and making them aware of real life expenses. I'd also look up the rent costs of a few properties in your area and tell them if they move out they'd by paying all these living costs AS WELL as the rent costs.

The river was thankfully much much lower this morning and it hasn't rained today - I hope other rivers around the country are following suit.
If you need to buy wine for xmas, a useful Mr T glitch started today where you can get Finest wine for a bit less than a bottle of cheap plonk. You need to get the 2 for £12 wines, preferably the most expensive ones (£8.99) and the 25% discount comes off the full price. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4307325

Stiltwalker I don't think anyone could ever accuse you of being lazy!

Hunters I noted that you replied to my query and said you would prefer me not to post on the other thread. But several regulars on here and the other one have asked me to continue to post them on here. So I will continue to do so.

Posting on what the weather is currently like is no use to anyone who wants to prepare in advance just in case. The people who said yes to continuing posting obviously want the forecasts and predictions and not a report on what is happening outside the window.

If the met office in the UK had been more accurate in their forecasts and warned people in advance there wouldn't be so many people in a terrible state now.

With all due respect 2tonsils, copying and pasting across boards and/or threads (cross-posting) has always been regarded as a no-no since the internet was born.

Why not pick a thread and post all updates in there?

Oh jem, you poor love - hugs to you and hope you feel better soon.

JKJ - I am so annoyed on your behalf. I believe what goes around comes around but that doesn't help you I know. I also know you often get some good luck after some bad .... so hoping you are due some good luck soon to balance things out.

Sorry to hear how you are feeling generally. Its hard to cope with something horrible when your reserves, whether emotional, health, financial or whatever are already low. Maybe 2013 will be a great year and you can put this one behind you in a few weeks. Hugs to you too.

what a nice surpise for your DH nutty! and thanks for the A*di tip - will try and remember to buy a couple of papers as pay day tomorrow after a 5 week month :T and need to stock up on some essentials and start Xmas shopping as very behind with it all.

I have also been following the news about the flooding and feel so helpless and concerned for everyone affected. I don't know how I would cope if it happenned to us. It has really made my think about all the clutter I have and what's really important - and it isn't lots of material stuff is it? I am going to push on with my slow decluttering and if anyone sees a place to donate I will give our Xmas treat money (£20 from my parents for DH & I to have a treat - we don't exchange presents for adults either side of the family - and this year we are barely exchanging pleasantries!)

Talking of donations, our boys save their pocket money the two weeks before Xmas and we take it into a charity shop(s) of their choice and pop it into the collecting tin. PDSA usually wins as they have a cat, dog and a third animal, kitten maybe collecting whatsit to put the money in.

I really wish I had enough spare cash to make some serious donations but have to be sensible and give what we can afford. I have lots of old clothes, shoes etc piling up to take to the charity shops soon. A friend persuaded me a while back (took weeks of persuasion) to sell our old clothes to one of these cash for clothes type places as she does that. I made hardly anything and felt incredibly guilty about it. Won't be doing that again personally but have no problem if you are desparate for cash and need to raise some money - people ebay and carboot after all.

Had a productive morning but not much done the last hour or so. Needed a rest as Wednesday is our busiest weekday eve and DH at college so on my own to sort things .

take care everyone, onwards and upwards

I have finally bought a halogen oven. It will be here in a few days, so expect lots of questions!:D I am going to move the breadmaker into a cupboard to make room for it on the worktop. Our main oven takes ages to get to temperature (nearly half an hour ) so I think on that alone I will start to make savings.

My tonsilitis has returned :( That's 3 times this year and twice in a fortnight - i am guessing flinging myself halfway round the world and back in a week hasn't done me much good. THe jetlag has gone now :T but am still a little sleep deprived. I will see how it goes as I'd rather not have more drugs. My problem is I just can't stop doing stuff - working or stuff round the house. Am working from home today so at least can take it a little easier. Will take myself off to bed earlier but OH isn't here tonight so it does all fall to me. Luckily tea is a bought pizza (I know, I know!!) so at least that is easy.

Ah well, back to the work - s'laters
I wanna be in the room where it happens

I'm supposed to go and buy something called Moroccan Oil (which I fear is going to be expensive) and she told me it had argan oil in so I was able to enlighten yet another person :rotfl:

    Kate

Katie - DGD gets mine for me - its £12-15 a bottle. If you have dry /bleached/coloured hair its brilliant - never goes lank & greasy.
Aldi do a 'Miracle Oil with Argan Oil' & I think its only about 3.99 - I've bought some but not tried it yet.
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
  • 'Spices of India' sell Jasmine Hair Oil which I think is £6ish, smells wonderful and lasts ages as you only use a teaspoon at a time, might be a cheaper alternative. Look on the website if you think it might be useful for you, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Maybe only post links if it's going to be adverse weather, and on one thread?

The only thing I would like to say of posting the links is that I followed a storm chaser link to my facebook account a few days ago. I clicked 'like' and now on my feed I get messages with the weather updates but also requests to donate. Just be aware tonsils that as he's/she is your friend, you may get in trouble for advertising their service?
